X3 game not fully realized but still worth a play. May 20, 2006
By Robert J. Pollock
"d21beast"
I am a huge X-Men fan and I have to first say that I bought this game on the day it came out and had beaten it with most extras unlocked by the third day I owned it.
If some of you recall Activision has had a history of X-Men movie spinoff games first starting with the PSX's platform X-Men: Mutant Academy which eventually "evolved" into the incredibly good X-Men: Next Dimension and then again with the great but lacking X2: Wolverine's Revenge game when the second movie hit theaters. As a previous reviewer has stated, X-Men: the Official Game does have the feel of Wolverine's Revenge to an extent. However it is both improved and downgraged in it's own respects.
X-Men: The Official Game is a prequal to the third istallment to the X-Men movie franchise as opposed to being a direct movie adaptation version, the bonus of this particular concept is the ability to play as Nightcrawler the "bamfing" blue mutant demon who is not present in X-Men 3 due to frequent pre-production issues when X-Men: The Last Stand was starting to come to fruition.
This X-Men game starts with the X-Men training in the danger room and mourning the recently departed Jean Grey and takes a team of five (though you only ever control three mutants in depth) mutant heroes through an unresolved Col. Stryker plot that was not spoken about in the second X-Men film. The three characters you get to control in depth (I say this because you do get to tell Storm when to fire lightning in particular levels) are Iceman, Wolverine and of course the loveable Nightcrawler. Each of these character have their own defining traits as you play as them and never feel simply like the same three heroes with different special abilities.
Here are the pros and cons of each character:
Iceman: I thought that Iceman was going to be one of the coolest players in the game (no pun intended!). I was however dissapointed the most with him. Unlike in the X-Men Legends game series Bobby Drake-Iceman is permanently suspended on his ice bridge. It's truely difficult to steer him and all of his levels seemed to be timed so you never really get a chance to enjoy playing as him or even look around for the hidden unlockables in his level. That being said, Shawn Ashmore actually does voice-work for the character and it makes him some what desireable to play just to enjoy hearing him while you struggle to keep your sanity throughout his various time trials.
Wolverine: As I mentioned before this game has the feel of X2: Wolverine's Revenge with respect to overhead views and constant slicing and dicing (no blood) of infanite faceless goons. However, where Wolvie's Revenge has complex battle combos and stealthy attack rewards this Wolverine has got a head butt attack that works some of the time and and fury meter that pretty much makes you invincible and super powered throughout it's limited use. Wolverine has great locals that he travels to and hearing Hugh Jackman actually voice the character is really quite a treat and deffinitely makes this confused loner the second best reason to play this game. Now onto the shining star...
Nightcrawler: Who whould have thought that a character whom has never had a successful career as a solo comic book character might actually have the potential for a great solo game? Nightcrawler is by far the most enjoyable character to play as in this game. Teleportation, Running matrix-style on walls, sneak attacks, and a humble german accent are all fully realized in this charater's missions throughout the game. These great features are only made better by Alan Cumming himself actullay voiceing the character! You'll find once you master his teleportation attacks, Nightcralwer his the most fun player in the game and I would truely love to see Wolverine's Revenge type of treatment given to this loveable circus performer in another game really soon!
Despite the numerous flaws with Iceman and and substandard voice-work for Pyro this game truely is one of a kind and deserves to be given a chance. It will be a quick victory even on hard difficulty settings (expect with Iceman, who's time limits become almost unattainable) and smooth and enjoyable ride.
Other great things to note are Patrick Stewart and Tyler Mane bringing thier voices in for Professor X and Sabretooth repspectively and John Ottman's original score for X2 is actually used in the game.
The game is great and I would like to have seen a few things improved upon visiually or even Nightcrawler given more solo treatment in this game and hopefully in an upcomming game, but if not to own, any fan of the movie series should at least give it a rent.

Just Give It a Chance! May 20, 2006
By Ryan A lot of people give this game a bad review because they're strictly gamers, not necessarily comic book fans, and they have a natural bias against games based on movies. I myself am not an avid gamer. This review is written from a hardcore comic book fan's point of view.
I personally really enjoyed this game. Yes, it can be slightly redundant. Yes, it can be slightly annoying at times since there aren't as many checkpoints as there could be. But the look of the game is incredible. The environments match the style of the movies very closely. Not to mention the levels can be a lot of fun to play.
A lot of people are ticked off that the cut scenes are nothing more than still photos of the characters with voice-overs. This is meant to represent comic book story frames. Besides, I think this method looks a whole lot better than cut scenes in other comic book games, such as Spider-Man 2.
If you're strictly a gamer, you might hate this game. But if you love the X-Men, then you shouldn't be disappointed by this. It's a fun game with lots of extras (like Danger Room missions and extra costumes), and it ties X2 and X3 together, so what more could you want?

Another Comic Book Title semi-WASTED!!!!!!!! Jun 18, 2006

"ravereviews"
Another comic book title semi-wasted. This game has alot going for it. Unfortunately it was very poorly executed. The game has the movies music, feel, and atomosphere down pat. But that is about it. It really lacks anything innovative in a action adventure brawler. I have to say that Wolverine is the worst character to play in this game. His hack & slash levels are so ordinary. Ice Man & NightCrawler seem to have the most entertaining rounds. Ice Man is always on his snow glide & Night Crawler can do his teleporting effect. Its such ashame we couldnt pick Storm, Colossus, Angel, Magneto, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Rogue, or Shadowcat. Another down side is that the game is not created for 2 players. I dont have an Xbox 360 but from what everyone tells me it has the most impressive graphics on the 360. I got a GameCube version & the graphics are fine but seems like it was made for the Nintendo 64 & Playstation 1 if anything. I got my game at Best Buy for 29.99 cause i was in no mood to shell out 39.99 for this game after all the bad press. All in all a decent game, but not on any level is it EXTRA-ORDINARY. Another thing is the animated cut scenes. There not so ANIMATED!!!!!! If you know what i mean? Its setup like your reading a comic book & the only characters that ever move in the cut scenes are the non X-men characters. All in all a decent action/adventure game & hopefully when the next X-men game comes out it will be so much better. A recent comic book video game that just came out that is really GOOD is Teen Titans & its only 19.99. Give Teen Titans and this one a try , X-men is not as bad as everyone says it is. But just wait till the price drops to 29.99 & under before making your purchase.
Horrible, Disgrace to the name of "X-Men" Jul 28, 2009

this game has good graphics, good fighting moves, but is not worth the cost, your time, or the time it took to make. after a while, the missions and boss fights are too hard, and there is no invincibility cheat, so you just can't pass it, which means if you see this game for sale online or at a store, pass it up, and if you don't like it, return it, or if you can't, sell it, or destroy it if you want to.
Worth it for Nightcrawler alone Jan 19, 2009
By Bemace It's so much fun to play as Nightcrawler that that's all I wanted to do. It ended up that I was only playing the other missions to get to the next nightcrawler mission. His teleporting, wall-walking, and other acrobatics are just cool. He should get his own game. It's sort of a combination of the old Prince of Persia and Spiderman. Teleporting really cuts down on all that boring _walking_ you normally do. The teleporting is also designed well so that you still have to work to beat the levels, and not *just* teleport around. His attacks aren't all that strong, so you do quick attacks, teleport out of the way, and then attack some more.
After a while, Wolverine grew on me. Like most people, he's the reason I got the game to begin with, but it can get boring just killing dozens or hundreds of the same goons. For all the brawling he does, he could use a lot more combo moves, but he only has a couple basic ones. On the plus side, the different types of enemies do require some different tactics. Unfortunately, I think they missed some opportunities. There's no chance for stealth, you just go up and start fighting. He can break lots of stuff with his claws, but not anything useful. For example, you can destroy all the support posts for some platforms, but nothing falls down. He also can't do anything else cool with his claws, like climb walls or anything. His healing ability would be an interesting and unique gameplay dynamic, except that they failed to make it unique. For some unexplained reason, the other two characters also have a healing option that can be charged up and used.
Iceman got turned into the silver surfer. He's *always* on his ice ramp thing. I kind of like that each of the characters has totally different styles of play, but the ice skating gets old after a while. It would have been better if only a few of his levels were on ice, or if you could get on and off.
