A comic nut finally gets a game worth his time! Mar 21, 2007
By MTJones I've been a comic nut since 1990, or the majority of my life. I'm a college-age 'gamer' (the latter word needs a disclaimer since I don't have the time to play video games very much, and often months go by before I spin up the old PS2 again). One of my disappointments as a kid was the scarcity of good comic-based video games.
Ultimate Spider-Man is one of the new generation of games that seek to change all that. Not only is the comic exciting - maybe a bit simplistic, but well-written, well-drawn, and fun - but so is this game. In fact, they took character designs from the USM artist (Mark Bagley) and script cues from the series' writer (Brian Bendis), making the experience as tightly integrated with the comic as you can get.
And the game engine is no slouch. The controls are easy to learn (and re-learn, if you happen to wait months between plays like I did), the camera shifts intuitively, and the web-slinging is both fun and natural. If I played this game for more than 2 hours at a time, I got a little motion sickness - but that taught me to limit my playtime, so it didn't hamper my enjoyment.
The setup is fairly simple: there is a main storyline that cuts back and forth between missions for Spider-Man and Venom. You also get time to do side missions as Spider-Man (such as saving pedestrians and the like). It took me a few tries at some missions, but they didn't require special skill to beat. And even though my gameplay was stretched out over the better part of a year, I felt the game was pretty short overall. The post-game replay value isn't so hot, except for a Venom mini-game where you run around and smash stuff, but that can get old fast. Kids are bound to enjoy this title, but experienced gamers will probably beat this in a few days.
You can figure out where you fall in this range of gaming experience. I'm a lifelong, lately-sporadic gamer without a lot of skill, and I love Spider-Man, so this was well worth the money.
A Great Spider-Man Game! Oct 25, 2009

Well first off allow me to say that I was never a comic nut, gaming got to me before it! Although my dad-who was a huge comic guy in his early teens to early 20's still tried to get me into it (never happened haha). So with this in mind I had no idea Ultimate Spider-Man (hereafter:USM) was based off a comic book until I brought it home and looked it up. What I like most about USM is that it assumes most players are like me,so at the begging of the game it gives you a little bit of back story and then goes into its own story mode for the game. The limited edition also includes a comic book that tells you whats happened prior to the game (nice touch).
Gameplay wise this is as easy as it gets,I have not played a Spider-man game since the original 3D spider-man came out for the PS1 (and that was a demo to boot) After the first mission I got a hang of the controls no problem.
The graphics of USM although from 2005 still look great as they were cel-shaded,giving a more cartoon look (cel-shaded graphics hold up a lot better than regular 3D graphics do) There is a little bit of slowdown on the PS2 version though nothing that will really affect gameplay.
The story of USM is pretty good for a spidey game and although bare-bones gets the job done (I've had way worse). My only complaint with USM is that its really short,it took me (a novice spider-man player) only 5 hours to beat it! The silver lining is that this game is so cheap now (I found the limited edition for the same price as standard-only $15!) that it really doesn't matter anymore about length (for $15 5 hours of story mode ain't bad)
I will now go over what the limited edition includes
What the limited edition includes:
A whole new cardboard slipcase that is holographic showing Venom in the front in purple and Spider-Man in the back in red. The DVD boxart is really neat,it's completely redesigned,on one half it shows the spider-man logo in red holographic with 'limited edition' on the top,on the other side there is a Venom logo with purple holographic also sporting the LE words at the top. The book is also different showing Spidey and Venom fighting the book is also branded with 'LE' words. The disc is also different, its purple and yea it says LE on it too! You also get a full issue comic book to sweetie the deal. I hear this was only a few $$ more to get new,but not many people bought them (shame) If you can find them used at Gamestop they are the same price as the regular edition ($15). I definitely recommend this to anyone!
A candle that burns at both ends Sep 25, 2005
By Charles E. Bradshaw After Spider-man 2 (the game) Treyarch proved it could do some really cool stuff with the Spidey franchise and left a lot of people looking forward to seeing how they'd handle advancing their work.
Ultimate Spidey is a great follow up to Spider-man 2. But hardly an advancement or improvement on what Spidey 2. If anything it takes a couple steps back. It's suprisingly different from predecssor. These differences are both its strengths and its weakness. The controls for starters are much more simple... which means web-slinging is a breeze, but that also means that it's not nearly as spectacular as it was in Spidey 2. All the air tricks, slinging stunts, cool web attacks, and combat nuances of Spidey 2 are not here. This is a reflection of the gameplay as a whole as well. Crimes to solve are few and far between, there are no citizens to get missions from, no minigames, nothing but races, battle tours, and story missions... which are nothing more than a chase scene and a boss battle. The gameplay is very bare bones, without being totally so. 10 hours tops is how long it took me for my first play through. This feels more like an old Final Fight style SNES Spidey game at times, rather than a follow up the awesome Spidey 2.
Now, on the other hand, while you don't get to really feel what it's like to be in Spidey's tights, you do get to take on some spectacular boss battles and chases. They're about all there is, but they're awesome for what they are. The story is awesome, albeit there are some questionable loose plot threads. the story goes by in the blink of an eye, but with excellent presentation. It plays out like animated comic book panels. What Ang Lee tried to do with the Hulk movie, but failed miserably. Here it's exciting, though sometimes lacking in audio (one minute there'll be vibrant sound effects, the next weak pitters where there should be slams and bangs). Graphically, it's gorgeous. There's detail here that's far beyond what has come before. And the inking effects really are pretty cool.
My honest feeling is that in a lot of ways, they tried too hard. There's a plethora of bad guys and scenery, it's fast and intense, but in the end it whizzes by in a rush and its over before you know it. I logged mad hours on Spidey 2, powering up, stopping crime, learning new slinging tricks. Here, you get to race the Human Torch from time to time and slinging for a couple hours waiting for a crime to happen. In time, with more replaying my feelings may change, but for now Ultimate Spidey feels like really awesome filler while waiting for Treyarch to really up the ante.

Some info on the game Nov 19, 2005
By Spydyr I dont have this game yet but I plan on getting it for christmas. I just wanted to write this review to inform buyer of some little facts about this game especially after reading the other review found here.
First this is not a sequel to the Spider-Man 2 game (which is based on the movie.) This is based on a Marvel comics titles Ultimate Spider-Man. The Ultimate line was started a few years back and is a sort of "what would our characters be like if they lived in 2000 (now). For example, Peter gets a job at the daily bugle as a internet/computer consultant and not as a photographer. (on a side note the ultimat line also has X-men, avengers (ultimates), and fantastic four books)
Secondly this game was made along side the writers of the comic and is true to the book. So much that this continues the "Venom" story-line that started in the book and will lead to a later story-line that take place after the game. To my knowledge this is the first time something like this happens. Usually a game cover something that happens in a movie or book but in this case is continues a story and leads up to another story, which i think is pretty unique.
Third, you get to play as spider-man and be all heroe like or venom and do whatever you want (villain time.) From what I've read in articles venom has to kill civilians in order to stay alive which is totally different from what spider-man would do (even though I know some of you have wanted to just slap those civilians around in other games.) Anyways this means you get two different story-lines in one package which i'm sure will give this game some replay value.
Im sorry this review really doesnt talk about the game-play and such but I just wanted to inform those that might be thinking "oh cool, spider-man 3 game is out" that this is not "spider-man 3" but a separate spider-man title not related to the movies, although they did based some of the game-play on the spider-man 2 game (with some changes off-course.) And to those of us who know about the spider-man mythology, the ultimate universe has its unique differences from marvels originaly line. One big difference is that Venom isnt an alien but something that was made by peter and eddie's fathers. So when you are making your mind up whether this is a good game or not, please try to remember this isnt based on the movies or the original marvel universe comics. Hopefully this will help people from doing "This is a bad game, this never happened in the movie or this didnt happen like that in the comic I read back in 1970's."
P.S. as i havent played this game yet I rated 3 stars since I'm figuring that means average and wont affect the average rating after there are more reviews. I didnt want to rate it but its making me. I truely believe this will be a great game.
