You are given the task of finding the hidden heir to a throne that sits empty, the previous emperor having been killed by an unknown assassin. With no true Emperor, the gates to Oblivion (the equivalent of hell in the world of Tamriel) open, and demons begin to invade Cyrodiil and attack its people and towns. It's up to you to find the lost heir to the throne and unravel the sinister plot that threatens to destroy all of Tamriel. In keeping with the Elder Scrolls tradition, players will have the option to experience the main quest at their own pace, and there will be plenty of opportunities to explore the vast world and make your own way. Numerous factions can be joined, such as the thieves or mages guilds, and each contains its own complete storyline and the chance to rise to the head of the faction and reap further rewards.Oblivion features a groundbreaking new AI system, called Radiant AI, which gives non-player characters (NPCs) the ability to make their own choices based on the world around them. They'll decide where to eat or who to talk to and what they'll say. They'll sleep, go to church, and even steal items, all based on their individual characteristics. Full facial animations and lip-synching, combined with full speech for all dialog, allows NPCs to come to life like never before. | | | |

FALSE ADVERTISEMENT Jan 21, 2010 Ok so is you play OBLIVION you know that the goty edition has a bug(Cure Vapirism-Bloodgrass), and the only way to solve this problem is to play the orginal elders scroll IV:Oblivion(Not game of the year edition). So i found this product, they clearly sold me this product, advertising that it was the original elders scroll. So i purchased it. THe item came 2 days later...and in the package was the game of the year edition which i already have. So the did a number on me. Make sure when purchasing this item you confirm with the retailer that it is in fact the original elders scroll:Oblivion(not game of the year edition). I had to get mine from GAMESTOP. I tried contacting them, but its been 3 weeks and i havent received and email from them yet. HOwever the product was BRAND NEW, FACTORY SEAL, and was amazing for its price. I still however wouldnt buy from them.

no 3rd person view Nov 24, 2009 i only rated one star because I didn't play it much yet because it is in first person view. I had read on line that you could switch to third person. now I hear that is only after you have beaten the game. grrrrrr. I do intend to try to make myself enjoy first person, but i don't know if that will fly. If I would have known this game was in first person view i never would have bought it.
good game Nov 15, 2009 If you like this kind of game you will have lot's of fun I think after Diablo II this is the best game, price / quality wot it your money.
Simply Excellent Game Sep 19, 2009 Oblivion, has a few appreciated nods to Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series. There is a bookstore merchant whose first name is Ogier. Like Loial the Ogier in Wheel of Time who loves books. Also if you attack someone's magical (magickal) powers it is called "severing" like in the Wheel of Time when a Channeler (magic user) was cut off from the One Power. So, cool. Other than that it has elements of HP Lovecraftan metaphysics and theology and also some LOTR.
It's a vast, vast game. I can see playing it for months and months and months, maybe even years. Even if I play it all the time. The world you play in is vast and you can explor ever inch of it. It's full of old mines, caverns, abandoned forts from the first human empire and ancient ruins from the age when the High Elves ruled. There are hundreds of minor quests and dozens of major quests (at least, that I can tell). I'm just having a grand time. I own three houses now. A shack in the Imperial City, a mansion in another city, and a small, but nice, house in yet another. It's a nice obsessive distraction (the decorating of the homes) between emptying caverns of monsters and looting the treasure, and going on quests. I've already saved the world once and will no doubt have more opportunities to do so. This game is AWESOME.

Most addictive game on PS3... for now. Role playing fan or not, this one's worth checking out. May 13, 2009 THE GOOD:
- Graphics: Overall graphics are good. The character detail, object detail and scenery are all well done. Lighting effects (especially the sky!) are great. Overall, not the best on PS3, but very good.
- Gameplay Depth: Enormous world to explore, tons of weapons, objects, and people to interact with, many quests to complete and tons of magic/spells. Quests vary from quick 5 minute tasks, to 2-3 hours - nice variation. I also like that you can choose from many different quests at one time, no need to follow a strict order of events. This makes the game very open ended.
- Character Creation: At the beginning, you create your character and can choose many attributes, races, etc. This adds a lot of depth and is very easy to use.
- Sound: Great use of Dolby Digital surround sound. Voices move around the speakers corresponding to player location. Overall sound is nicely done.
- Simple menus: easy to find/equip weapons, magic spells, etc. Player stats and character development progress well displayed in easy to read graphs. Fairly easy to use maps and quest descriptions.
- Quick load times (for PS3 anyways).
THE BAD:
- Some graphics draw problems - objects/buildings pop up on the horizon. This takes away from the game's overall refinement, and the realism of the environment.
- Some annoying cut scenes, dialogue, but I expect this in a role playing game.
- No game percent complete - big mistake in my book. How do I know how close I am to beating this game?
- Map is a little difficult to navigate, no zoom feature.
