Ninja Stealth At Its Finest Mar 29, 2009
By Erisu Kimu If you're a longtime fan of the Tenchu series like I am, then this will be an essential addition to your collection. It's the fourth in the series, but fifth installment if all canon chapters are included such as Fatal Shadows (although this is more of a side story that doesn't have anything to do with the main plot involving Lord Gohda, Princess Kiku and Rikimaru). If you haven't played any Tenchu games prior to this one, then I suggest you go back and track down previous chapters before you make a proper judgment on gameplay, characters and story. There is so much that compels, yet so much that people have neglected. Start with Tenchu 2: Birth of the Stealth Assassins, which unfolds the origins of all the main characters and you will quickly be engaged in the story. It's really good. Then play Tenchu: Stealth Assassins, which continues the saga, followed by Fatal Shadows and Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven.
Now, Tenchu: Shadow Assassins takes place one year after the events of WoH, but unlike WoH, the story is a lot better and makes more sense (that also means Tatsumaru doesn't return! Good god, let him rest in peace with however much honour he has left). When Princess Kiku is kidnapped (again), Ayame immediately goes after the culprit while Lord Gohda sends Rikimaru on a different mission. From there on, mysteries are embroidered with endless plot twists and the 'who is behind it all?' question is asked till the shocking end. The gameplay is like previous games, although people have called it linear. But, there is still freedom in the way you go about your business. There is never one way to do anything. The controls take some getting used to. You can't crouch to hide like in previous games, but you can use the right shoulder button to dash from bush to bush while in shadow. Basically, the shadows are your gift and best hiding spots.
The combat system is bad, because you have no freedom to fight the way you want to like before. Instead, you follow red arrows in order to defend against the enemy and your sword has limits until it finally breaks if used too much. Returning all the way back to check point (the beginning of the floor) can be pretty annoying. Also, old Tenchu fans might be irritated by the fact that rooftop observation and the usage of a grappling hook are both absent. This limits the player to stay on the ground in most cases. On top of that, you don't use your own weapons during stealth kills, which is pretty odd. But, considering that ninja adapt to the environment and use enemy weaponry against them is acceptable. If you're aiming for Grandmaster, then you need to consider the time limit that you need to compete against in order to achieve that. Overall, everything grows on you with time and you'll be stealth-killing your way through each mission. If you're a fan of the series, you might be satisfied (it of course depends on how picky of a fan you are) and if you're new to the series, you might still find it fun. It's a great entry in my honest mind and my current favourite of the bunch.
Pros:
- Solid Stealth Gameplay (kill from bushes, inside of barrels, inside of storage rooms, from rafters, from under benches, from under floorboards, from shadows, from underwater, triple stealth kills from behind and from top wall corners).
- Story (Very enthralling and will make you wonder what's really going on, although they really need to stop reusing the 'rescue Princess Kiku' idea).
- Music (Like earlier games in the series, the music is very good and addicting).
- Graphics (Everything from environmental details such as lightning effects, torch lighting, shadows, water, skies and village ruins are great. The cutscenes themselves are worth getting the game for alone).
- Controls (They're different, but once you get used to them, the rest is easy. Also, the PSP analog/thumb stick allows for far better target aiming than the Wii remote. Basically, PSP > Wii for this game).
- Good Voice Acting (Unlike previous entries, the voice acting here is actually really good. Everyone, including Ayame sound like they should).
- Assignments (I think only Fatal Shadows had a feature like this, but here you get way more than just basics. You actually get to play where killing counts with whatever category you're practicing for. That also means you can achieve Grandmaster status here).
Cons:
- 10 Missions (You start with Rikimaru and go through five missions, before you switch to Ayame for four and then back to Rikimaru for the last. It's good perspective play and the missions themselves can be lengthy, but it's still not enough).
- Lack of new characters (There are only two new characters in this (minus the merchants and small fries) and one of them doesn't matter (Jubei look-alike). Rinshi is the character you should pay attention to, but other than her, you only get the same old characters with updated looks).
- Combat System (The fact that you can't inflict special moves and have to follow arrows until you either win or die is annoying. Even the boss fights leave much to be desired because of this).
- No Grappling Hook and Rooftop Roaming (These aren't big deals to me, but sometimes you'll wish they were available for your own stealth conveniences like in the earlier games).
- Poor Dialogue (It's cheesy like WoH and the first Tenchu (funny accents made it even worse), but not to the point where it's intolerable. It's just not good).
Grab it Nov 28, 2011
By William Totten Now discontinued and still at a good price. If you like this type of game then well worth a few bucks.
Great PSP Game Mar 18, 2011
By radar This is one of the best PSP games I have played. It will make you wish you were a Ninja.
Pretty Good Nov 30, 2010
By BrandonX3 Well, I'm glad to play another Tenchu game, but it was different than the previous ones in terms of game play. Nearly every aspect of the game play I'm previously familiar with is non-existent in this title. The grabbing hook to get on rooftops quick, the simple combos, same stealh kill animations, and etc are all gone.
The new Tenchu revolves much more around realism. If you want get on rooftops in certain parts of stages, you will have to stack crates and get on from there. If you don't want to be seen easily in certain situations, you will have to blow out candles on order for shadows to be developed to blend in it, hide in bushes, basically keeping out of the enemy sight.
This game is harder to play than the previous, so don't expect to stealth kill enemies while running to them from behind. They are smarter, depending on the enemy. They are different ways to stealth kill, which you will be informed in training mode.
If you are caught, you can't escape from your enemy, which is a mandatory fight. It's basically an defend and attack case. Be sure to defend the correct way, because your sword could eventually break.
Assuming you like the changes in this title, then buy it. There is no reason not to.
Not the best Tenchu, I have an idea though... Aug 04, 2010

I assume you have played the other tenchu games. While this lacks a lot of the features that made me love the original games of the series so much, it has some interesting moments and would be decent if the controls were not so bad. The psp, in my opinion, has horrible action game controls. It would play better if you switched the functionality of the d-bad and the analog stick in this game (too bad you can't do this in game). I think the best way to play this game would also be to use a PlayStation 3 controller, I hope Sony invents a way to play psp umd's on the ps3 (with a sixaxis or dual-shock 3 controller, essential to my point!) through either a firmware update or an accessory of some sort. Other gripes include an opera like opening music score that I felt didn't live up to music of previous titles. Overall the missions are not that much fun to replay, because the controls are frustrating. I say bring tenchu back to the ps3 re-release shadow assassins on it and bring over tenchu Z, I think they would sell decently, just market to the MGS crowd.
