 WTF did they do to the drums? Aug 10, 2008

First things first: The song selection is pretty good, and the vocal, guitar, and bass aspects of the songs are great, pretty much identical in function and execution to the original game. The drums however? Fuhgettaboudit.
My first gripe: you don't have to earn overdrive. They give the fills to you automagically. This kinda defeats the whole purpose; overdrive is there to help you with the hard parts after you did well in the easier parts. I guess this is a strange gripe, but really annoys me.
My second--and much more significant problem--with the modified drum play is whatever they did to the bass drum (the pedal). I can't tell if they changed the timing, or if it registers a beat differently, but either way playing the drums in RB:TP1 is an absolutely unfun chore. Songs that should be easy, fun, and a blast to play on medium ("Buddy Holly" and "All The Small Things") lose all their potential for enjoyment as soon as you hit the pedal for the first time: you'll spend the rest of the song concentrating on not messing up the beat rather then rocking out with your friends.
I'm not sure what possessed Harmonix to make these changes; I'm going to have to try RB2 before I buy it, in case these changes make it into the sequel (boy, I hope they don't). That said, if you are the singer, guitarist, or bassist for your "rock band" I can't recommend this Track Pack enough; the songs are a blast to play, and there's something in there for everyone.
However I pity my fellow drummers.

The track pack doesn't include as many songs as we would like, but it makes a great extension of the game. When you get tired of the songs in the origional you just pop in the track pack and have more options to choose from. A must have for people who play a lot.

The positives are that this is overall a good selection of the most popular Rock Band downloads. I was happy to see that I could keep track of my quickplay Bass scores locally unlike RB1, and that the conversion down from the PS3 game wasn't jarring, in fact this game feels and looks quite smooth for a PS2 release. The vocals are much easier to hit pitchwise, and the expert and hard modes feel more balanced on all the instruments, as do transitions and chords. The impact of a mere 20 songs is lessened by the multiple career paths and certain ones are just terrific to revisit (Interstate Love Song, Moonage Daydream, Truckin') on drums, guitar and vocals. The lack of BIG ROCK FINISHES is perplexing and I feel like something is missing mostly about 5 or six songs at least or some kind of unlockable content or extra credits song. The GHIII guitar works great on this game on the PS2(except for the effects switch, which offers new sounds this time around) and the RB DRUMS< GUITAR

Not that Rock Band isnt fabulous all by itself but this track pack is like buying Rock Band for the first time all over again.
I love 30 seconds to Mars and All American Rejects too. The tracks are great fun for the entire family. How do I know????
Cause I am the mom who bought this whole thing for my children and now fight with them over who gets to play the drums on Dont Fear the Reaper!!!! This thing is family fun every night. (Except school nights) LOL
I am waiting for the day they have particular artists track packs!! Maybe a Linkin Park pack, or a Bon Jovi pack, or maybe a ... Pat Benatar pack...ok I am older than most people who probably buy this...but seriously - how cool would that be????

This game is alright. I got it so that I could have more songs to play for Rock Band. You should definitely look at the song list before you buy it. The songs aren't really my taste. I got for the songs by Boston. If you like the songs, you should get it.
