 GTA: Mars Mar 16, 2010
Red Faction: Guerrilla (a more appropriate name would have been Grand Theft Auto: Mars) is a terrific game and a splendind new addition to the genre.
I tend to enjoy the GTA knockoffs more than the GTA games themsleves: The original Mercenaries, for me, typifies sandbox games; and I've been enjoying Pandemic's Saboteur while playing Red Faction (GTA: Vice City is still the king, however).
Red Faction: Guerrilla has gorgeous 1080p graphics, varied mission types, somewhat intelligent AI, creative weapons, and a remarkable physics engine that shows buildings cracking, crumbling and falling apart with repeated abuse.
The story is a little predictable. If you want a great Mars story, don't play a video game, read Kim Stanley Robinson's Red Mars/Green Mars/Blue Mars trilogy. If you want a great Mars video game, play Red Faction: Guerrilla.
Fun Gameplay, Great Game Engine, Good Graphics, Brilliant Game Mar 12, 2010
Anyone who rates this below four stars is out of their mind! This game is incredibly fun, especially if you like driving games, because there is a lot of driving in it!
Pros:
Very good graphics. (The people who say the graphics are bad must either be blind or have their PS3s set up wrong...) The graphics are smooth, and the cutscenes look very nice. Character models are pretty good. The graphics have a very "sci-fi" feel to them, which comes from the lighting effects.
The setting for the game is great. Deserts, mountains, cities, mining towns, and so on and so forth! It does get a little monotonous after a while, but this can always be remedied by blowing something up!
The game engine is absolutely fantastic. No retarded glitches like Fallout, no constant falling off of high spots like Force Unleashed, no crazily imbalanced physics like Halo 3, just a smooth, bugless gaming experience. Also, the GeoMod engine is FANTASTIC! Just about anything in the game can be rendered down into dust with the sledghammer, and the game forces you to use basic engineering principles. (For example, if you place your charges on main load-bearing support beams rather than superfluous glass windows, you will do more damage to the building's overall structure and will be able to demolish it with fewer charges. Better charge placing or rocket aiming = less ammo used!) The fact that the game is in third person makes the settings look all the more majestic and alien.
The game has a surplus of cool weapons, from a basic assault rifle to an automatic shotgun to a nano-rifle which dissolves pretty much anything. Any weapon that an enemy drops may be picked up, and then equipped later at a safehouse. Explosions look good, as well.
Lots of different vehicle models. However, they all function in pretty much the same way, minus a few differences in speed, armament, and carrying capacity.
Multiplayer is hilariously fun.
Did I mention there's a sledghammer? Than can knock down skyscrapers? Yah. There's a sledgehammer that can knock down skyscrapers.
Cons:
The game can get pretty hard at times. You might need to tone down the difficulty setting for some of the later missions.
Although the graphics are beautiful for a sandbox game, they aren't on par with games like Killzone 2 or MW2, especially in some areas where the ground texture looks a little rough. Nonetheless, buildings and most terrain features are fairly well rendered.
Sadly, you can't fly the hovering gunships. Also, the fact that you can topple a skyscraper with your sledgehammer does tend to break the suspension of disbelief a little bit. But it's still pretty frikken cool...
Voice acting can get be a little funky at times, and it seems like the guerrillas, at least the ones who speak, are predominantly female...
Storyline does take a back seat to gameplay. Nonetheless, this game's storyline has been overly ripped-upon, IMO. The storyline isn't elaborate, but did you honestly expect an M. Night Shyamalan style story out of a sandbox game? At least it isn't as bad as the GoW 2 storyline, which consists primarily of the words "Marcus, Maria, Locust, Anya, and Brumak" grunted over and over again in a testosterone overdosed voice...
All in all, this game's many pros overwhelm its cons. If you want a game where you basically just go around killing people and blowing every last building down to its constituent atoms, then this is the game for you. Plus, it has VERY fun multiplayer, good graphics, and a super-smooth game engine. I recommend this game to every gamer who likes sandbox games. And at this price, it's a steal!

I bought this game while reading the good reviews ,,ignoring the poor reviews.Only after playing game did I see that I had been duped so to speak.The game is as I have said really really bad. I am now reading poor reviews and can see just how right they are.
First of all the story is horrible and unblievable. Your on mars in a martial law type of environment and you land and your brother is blown away ( again it makes very little sense) and than your given a sledge hammer and you have to smash everything,i mean everything. Tedious gameplay! Makes no sense and is NOT FUN after first one minute !!!
Than you get a gun which doesnt sound like a gun at all..Horrible sound effects ,,,than you use your seldge to smash more things. Than you go into suv and drive and drive and drive than you realuize your going wrong way turn around and drive more and than eventually your led to some more areas to seldge things apart and some bad guys around poor graphics( PLAYSTATION 1 like) .Than you get more very poor constant interaction with broken voices and really nonsense babble. Oh my waht a real Waste of a game..Its now same day I bought this game and have it on ebay already...
I also Just bought Unchartered 2 you want a real game play that..This game is about 1/10th as good as that.

Very fun game Dec 26, 2009
I've just finished playing through the single player campaign. It is very engaging and challenging. The dynamics of choosing your own mission, among many different choices, is very enjoyable to me. I've also played with a friend taking turns to see how much destruction we could do. That was fun. I've only played a couple of online missions, and those are fun too. To me, the thing that differentiates this game from the rest, is the single player campaign.

Red Faction is a surprising good game - from THQ. The game is fun, the visuals are good (for an open world type of game, better then AC2 at times!) and controls great. Overall worth the money, I have seen worse games for the full price. This comes @ $30 or so now (or less). Easily worth as a recommendation.
