3The "New" Replacement (Generic) Controllers for PS2  Apr 18, 2012 By John TWELVE Hawks
Foreward: I have added a very important edit concerning the cost of this item. It's the final paragraph preceding the numerical scores at the bottom. Check it out, you'll thank me later.

As anyone who still derives happiness from his/her PS2 may already know, Sony is no longer producing the DualShock 2 controllers. If you want a DualShock 2 OFFICIAL Sony controller, your options are as follows: a) Hunt down a used one, b) Hunt down a brand new one that's been sitting somewhere, unopened, alone and unloved, or c) Purchase a brand new (or used) PS2 system, whether from an online seller or if you can locate one at a local game shop, and make sure a clean, functional DualShock 2 is included.

As you may also know, since the PS2 is still a wildly popular console and people still play it regularly, there must be a steady flow of new controllers for gamers to buy as their old ones wear out, break, and die. So, under some licensing agreement (the legal and technical aspects of which I am not intimately familiar with, nor do I care about) with Sony, several companies based in China are now basically allowed to produce DualShock 2 Controllers that look and, ostensibly, act identically to the official, Sony-made DulaShock 2s of yore. These appear the same, are the exact same size, dimensions, weight, have all the buttons in the same locations and identically marked...the only way to really tell one of these generics from the old Sony models is simple: they're identical in every way save for one, and that is, you'll notice that the large dark-gray "SONY" logo is NOT above the start/select buttons on these. That's it. Or is it...?

So we've established they look the same, feel the same, and they're SUPPOSED to operate the same. Do they? Yes and no. These are, first off, far superior to any of the standard generic controllers that flooded the market during the PS2's peak; you remember how lousy those old MadCatz and Pelican controllers were, right? You go to a buddy's house for some gameage, sit down, your buddy snatches up the actual, real Sony DualShock 2 controller and then, since you're player 2 and it's his house, you get the sh---y back-up controller he has sitting around. Usually some heavy, oddly shaped contraption that looked and felt nothing like the PS2 controller your grubby little paws had grown so accustomed to. I hated those. You did too, I'd wager. So, yes, against that very low standard, these new unofficial-official PS2 controllers are worlds better than the misshapen generic controllers of yesteryear. But how about stacked against the gold standard, the ACTUAL Sony DualShock 2 that these are made to take over for? In a word, adequately.

As noted previously, the feeling is fine; it's as heavy, wide, and contoured as it ought to be. So, aside from that missing SONY logo festooned on the face, what else is different? Just a few things. For starters, as you may or may not know, hard, shiny plastic is cheap plastic. The 'softer,' more malleable plastic (think Tupperware, or, for that matter, think the face buttons on the actual Sony DualShock 2...) costs more to produce and mold. As such, automobile critics will often note when an automaker has cut corners by using the cheap shiny junk for their car's interior. Well, with these new controllers, you get that stuff. Lots of it. The case, buttons, and analog sticks are all made of a noticeably harder, shinier plastic. So, as I have learned in my time (I have gone through one of these already and am on my 2nd one, having whittled down and worn off the coating on the last one's analogs and I wore the paint off all the buttons too) with these, if you play button-mashers, action/adventures, fighting games, or any twitch/fast response games, you will get coarse callouses on the pads of your gaming fingers--thumbs especially--if you don't already have them. These are hard on your hands. Where the old Sony controllers had a very pressure-sensitive feel and you could finesse the action buttons and control how hard you pressed down, like the accelerator on a car, these new models lack that feeling. Your button presses now are all going to feel very deliberate and equally meted out, regardless of how hard or soft you want to engage the button.

Concerning style, they look great. As with the originals, the standard that comes bundled with most newer PS2s is black, but there are all of the same colors as were made by Sony. So, if you thought those semi-transparent blue, green, yellow, gray, and fully transparent clear controllers looked super cool, rest assured all the same colors are available in this new, generic format.

Thus far, I'd say the main drawback to these is the aforementioned. They could be worse or better. Personally, I would rate the original Sony controllers better in every way, but if you need a new PS2, need a new controller, or insist upon buying new and won't entertain the thought of a pre-owned controller, these are fine. They work. You'll still be boss at Street Fighter or God of War; it won't actively hinder or impinge upon your gaming at all. These new generics don't detract from your gaming experience at all. They're just noticeably a bit more chinsy than the Sony-branded ones.

A final and important note about cost: DO NOT overpay for one of these. You can routinely find them, brand new in the package, for less than $9 right here on Amazon. If there's not one at that price point the first time you look, be patient and wait a day or two unless you NEED NEED NEED a controller that very second. I assure you, myriad sellers list myriad brand new boxes of these on a weekly basis here. Don't get swindled by the sellers who try to make their controller LOOK as though it's an original PS2 controller by being vague and using small photos, then listing their generics at ridiculous prices, hoping you'll go, 'oh, hey, this guy says he has a brand new dual shock control for PS2, it looks like the same box, and he's charging $24.99, so it *MUST* be a real one...right?' Wrong. Don't get suckered! If a controller is a genuine Sony, you can bet the seller will trumpet that fact in his/her listing and it'll be readily visible to you.

3PS2 controller  Jan 07, 2012 By Elinse
This controller is pretty cheap made. I mean really, i can literally tell the difference between an original controller and this one just by feeling it. Plus the R2 button doesn't push correctly as the other ones do. But the worse part is that this controller's cord is not, half as long as a original controller's cord. Which means this controller cord is like 4 feet long, which is way too short for me. Oh well as long as it works im still keeping it. (Im not going to waist $5 dollars to ship it back plus 20% restocking fee and get like 3 to 4 dollars back when i paid $10, no thank you)

2Not That Good  Dec 09, 2011 By nodnarB
I bought this just to replace a broken controller and well, it's pretty terrible. First of all the L and R buttons don't work that great because they aren't seated right.

My main complaint is how they designed the D-Pad. It has sharp corners on it so if you play anything at all with this D-Pad it will give you a hard time.

Also the cord is short.

You get what you pay for I guess, but still this thing in the photo looks like a licensed controller and everything so it really sucks when you get it and you can actually use it and see that it's a piece of junk.

5Great controller  Oct 07, 2011 By Jessica C Emr
What can I say: simple, easy to use, stylish! That about sums this conroller up. Just the way I like it.
