5Do not assume it's going to be like the other shooters...  Oct 09, 2009 By Steven W. Johnston
I will say this is an amazing fps combat sim. The level of realism is set above and beyond most anything else released. If you are looking for the next thing to top COD-style fast action, this is not what you're looking for. Yes, I like most other people am looking very forward to the Modern Warfare 2 release, but not every fps needs to be compared to it again and again.

This game is very simular to the original Rainbow Six (non-Vegas) or SOCOM from the PS2 era. The combat is slower and tactical based. You command your fireteam with a decent range, but simple to use commands. They include surpressing fire, assault on targets, wepons free, etc. You can also call in various Air and Artillery strikes as part of your attack. So far, missions are straight to the point: covert search and destroy, eliminate all hostiles, clear and secure command posts, etc. But I'm only a couple hours into the game, and have a lot more to explore. The free-roam ability is a very nice touch to the overall gameplay. The outdoor terrain is vast and gives you a lot of options for plans of attack or escape.

Again, the biggest strength of this game is realism. If the following examples do not sound challenging, then this game will not be for you:

-Engaging the enemy at average of 100-400 meters, Sometimes only with iron sights.
-When you take a bullet the screen doesn't just turn red while you wait to respawn health. The impact will stun you if it doesn't kill you.
-You cannot unload your sidearm as fast as you can tap your finger. It does portray the recoil of a .45 and you need precious moments to resight your target.

This game is a great shooter that offers a different style gameplay. The controls are very intuitive and took almost no time to get used to. I have not tried the multiplayer/online game modes, so I have no reviews on that aspect. No, there is no real backstory to your character, you just jump into each mission. No, you will not run and gun your way straight to each objective until you complete the level. Please do your research before dropping $50+ bucks on a game before assuming it was going to be like another game you really, really like.

Pros:
-One of the few tactical-based FPS on the market
-Expansive enviroments seem like a battlefield, you're not locked into a set path
-Realistic damage makes you plan carefully, and more intense when you need to move

Cons:
-Gameplay is not for everyone
-Taking a stray bullet to the chest or head and restarting checkpoints can get frustrating
-Some objectives are governed by unspecified time restraints, resulting in a no-warning mission failure.

Overall:
Rent this game if you're unsure you'd like it. It's not the next Halo or COD, nor was it ever advertised to be. The intesity and accomplishment is multiplied knowing you can't just simply rush point B from point A. One bullet can kill you, three bullets definately will. You will always need to think before your next move. This game is very entertaining if you can plan a mission and adapt/react when it all goes wrong.

3Good but could have been alot better  May 19, 2010 By Peter D "pdesil"
This game is good the graphics are adequate. The map is amazing and expansive but that is where the good stuff ends. The game is incredibly difficult which is ok to a level but combined with the glitches and poorly written mission scripts. It is frustrating at best. This game needs to be modded into something so much better. Codemasters did the work with the map and the game but the writing is poor. Good concept but poor game.

4Its real alright  Oct 06, 2010 By Dizzlekrew
this game is not for everyone. It is definately a great tactical FPS, tactical being the keyword. This game delivers great gameplay but at a cost. First off let me make this clear, this is a pretty tough game. Nothing compared to something like MW2 or BC2. If you are looking for those type of games then click theback button and keep looking for a game. This game will definately make you frustrated and if playing on hardcore very time consuming, 1 bullet can end 40 mins for gameplay. The best part about this game is it is fully online CO-OP, same with the trophies. One person can lead your squad do everything for the trophies and you will also get them. It isnt much fun to play alne to be honest because the AI in this game just sucks. Your own guys will run in front of your gun, dont take cover when you do and sometimes just dont listen to what you have to say. So online is the best way to play the campaign. I havent much dabbled in the other modes because im not a fan of the AI and ordering them around is not for me, but co op is tough and fun at the same time. Hardcore mode is just that hardcore. It doesnt make the game harder by making the enemies more accurate or smarter, it just takes away things from your HUD like your compass. Also there is no saves in between checkpoints so one bullet can make you start all over. You will either love it or hate it, most will hate it ut i enjoyed it. Hope this helps you. If you want a full review visit Gamespot.com they are really good about giving the truths of the game.

2Operation Fail  Nov 28, 2009 By Elwenil "Elwenil"
Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising aspires to bring military simulation shooters like the original Operation Flashpoint and ARMA I&II to consoles. Unfortunately between Codemasters lack support and dishonestly on their packaging, it fails miserably. To date the game has been patched once since release and some downloadable content has been released but for PS3 owners that DLC is lost in limbo with Codemasters saying they gave the content to Sony to release and it's in their hands and Sony's customer service apparently claiming that they have yet to receive it. According to the Codemasters forums, the PS3 DLC was to be released in Europe by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe on November 26th, but as of today, the 28th, that has come and gone with no release nor information. This is the sort of support you can expect with this title.

On the topic of Codemaster's dishonesty, there are several misleading points made on the box of the game and in the marketing. For example the description here on Amazon says, "Open-World Gameplay - Gameplay is completely open and objectives are assigned as they would be in real life. In addition, all building can be entered, all vehicles commandeered and weapons and ammunition scavenged." This is not entirely true. Those looking for the completely open, go anywhere, anytime game world like Operation Flashpoint, ARMA or similar will find that the mission ends if you stray too far off the path. This is not to say that you don't have a lot of room to move, but you can't take off and do whatever you want with the stock game. The DLC pack, which is supposed to be available now **for an extra fee** has a "freeroam" mode where you can explore the island with no enemies present. Also, there is almost no aircraft available in the singleplayer game to use and no attack choppers or tanks to be used. There are tons of vehicles around both military and civilian, but you can only really control Jeep-like vehicles like the HMMWV in the singleplayer game. Another point made by Codemaster's advertising is, "Extensive List of Weapons and Vehicles - Utilize more than 70 real-life weapons supporting realistic ballistic system and more than 50 land, air and sea vehicles." I have yet to see a boat that can be piloted in the game and I've beaten it several times. Also the weapons are very limited, much like ARMA games you get what the soldier you control in the fireteam was issued. Many times this is a run of the mill M16 with iron sights. Those desiring something with a scope will have to either find one of the few hidden in the game or by chance pick one up from a dead soldier. Some weapons are in the game as advertised but you never see them. For example in the case of a particular Chinese submachine gun, I only encountered after disabling a enemy helicopter in flight and forcing it to land intact so that the crew survived and killing the crew on the ground.

It's not all bad, the game is worth experiencing if you enjoy military simulations, but not if you are a casual shooter gamer like Call of Duty series or similar and you can pick it up for less than it's normal retail price. There are a few holes in the storyline and a few "WTF?" moments but overall the singleplayer plays out ok except for a few stupid AI moments and bugs. On the harder difficulty levels the game becomes an exercise in frustration as the harder difficulty takes away and mid-mission save points and one of the frequent AI glitches can force you to start the mission over and over. The save points make the lower difficulty levels a little easier on your stress level as they are fairly frequent and painless. Sometimes you still get a glitch like a pilot you are supposed to rescue and escort to the extraction point simply refuses to respond and will not follow you or even better, runs off aimlessly toward the enemy. PTSD maybe? Either way without the pilot at the extraction, the mission never ends and you are forced to start over.

Multiplayer is where this game could have really shined, but instead it is where it completely fails. The ridiculous peer to peer system is glitchy and locks up frequently. The patch helped some but for the most part the multiplayer is simply not enjoyable unless you really love this game for some reason. The "host" naturally gets a latency advantage over everyone else, though it has gotten a little better with the patch, it is still a problem. The game frequently freezes and you constantly get dropped from games after spending a lot of time trying to get into a game. That is another huge point. Due to the general disgust with Codemaster's lack of support or even customer service, many players have already given up on the game so the multiplayer is like a ghost town and it can take 30 minutes to an hour to find a game sometimes. Not exactly what gamers really want to deal with when all they want to do is play a game and have some fun.

In the end, Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising is a love it or hate it game. There are those who stand behind it as the only military simulation game to make it to the consoles and therefore worthy of devotion. Then there are those who are severely put off by the lack of features promised by all the marketing hype and Codemaster's cavalier attitude towards communication with concerned customers. I guess I fall somewhere in the middle being fed up with the unworkable multiplayer after paying the retail price of $60 for the game. I might not feel so bad had the game been cheaper or had all the promises on the box been kept but as it stands I will not be giving Codemaster's any more of my money. Ever. Play at your own risk.

3Make the Multiplayer BUG free!!!!  Nov 07, 2009 By Real Named Person "wowzee"
This game is very much fun for me. I always wanted to play a real life FPS like this which would at least make me feel like firing real guns for real effect. There is a Sniper mission in Cod4 MW1 in which you have to sneak within enemy lines and take out a terrorist leader. I immensely enjoyed that mission due to the dread it gave me of being discovered, even though i was playing against AI bots. Also the one shot kills with sniper gun is what i like to play like - Precise, minimum shots and mostly stealth. I have been waiting for such an experience for so long till i got my hands on OFP:DG.

Almost all of OFP's missions are like above. This sense of dread of being killed off instantly by anybody else with a gun is perfect! Even though the AI bots are dumb, they sure know how to fire in your direction. And if at least 1 out of 10 bullets they fire lands on you, you can end up with a minor flesh wound to incapacitated to dead with a critical shot. So playing against AI is very challenging and you have to kill them as soon as they spot you. You cannot hide because they will come around your position ready to fire at you. CQB with AI is a very unstable situation from which you wont walk out alive most of the time.

The best way to get kills is to spot and snipe enemies with marksman rifles from up to 100-300m away and use sniper rifles above that range. I only do single shot firing as anything else destroys the accuracy and wastes bullets. For firing over 400m, some bullet path adjusting need to be done. But below that range you will hit where you aim, if you counter the recoil. I always find myself killing AI team mates to steal their marksman and sniper rifles if they happen to have it :) . The night ops mod guns are the best during night missions as you can search the landscape for enemies that appear white.

Now after this initial buzz, i would like to get into the real trouble bugging this game.

1. The friendly AI is dumb and irritating at times. If you ask them to move to a position they will move 100 metres away from it and keep walking towards the enemy. In a mission that requires you to rescue downed pilots, as soon as you discover the AI pilots, they assume command of your team or something, instead of following your orders. When i say "follow me" they will say the same thing and go in the direction of the chasing and gunning enemy only to get killed and fail the mission. The only way to solve this was to take out all enemies before discovering the hostages and leading them to safety. When i am mounted on a vehicle, if i order the AI to move from point A to B, they tend to take the straight line path and get stuck at obstacles.

2. The enemy AI is predictable and always chickens out and falls prone to the ground if you fire near their heads/shoulders. And in all the fuss to get back up they are sitting ducks to my fire. I did encounter some instances in which the enemy fired from inside/behind a wall. There is no way they could see me coming.

3. There are a sht-load of problems with the buggy multiplayer.
3.1 You can see soldiers dead and stuck in the sky if you kill them during a helicopter ride.
3.2 You can shoot an enemy 15 times with a sniper rifle at 100m and he still wont die. But you can kill him with a vehicle mounted gun
3.3 Often gets disconnected from hosts
3.4 If host leaves, game ends. They should have learned from Cod4
3.5 Got kicked due to some unknown reason a few times. Was it the host player or was it because i shot at friendly AI players?
3.6 Mostly lagging players cause frictional jerky movement especially in vehicles.

Some of the ways to make this game better will be fixing the multiplayer issues. Also add a way to choose weapons in single and multi player as it adds a lot of re-playability. In addition, more maps/missions should be added as DLC for single and multi player. The single player was extremely short and there was no big war anywhere as every mission amounted to only a short skirmish.
