Another year, another bland edition of NBA Live, another $50 bucks down the tube. Mar 10, 2006
By Kevin Rienecker
"Kev"
Oh boy, have I been suckered again.
This isn't the worst basketball game released this year (see Sony's NBA '06: The Life for that dubious distinction), but the stupid thing is so freakin' disappointing it may as well be. If by some crazy chance anyone from EA Sports involved with this franchise bothers to look at most of these reviews, God-willing, maybe we'll get some real improvements for next years' version. Since I'm here, I may as well air my beef(s), along with some thoughts. Maybe even add an 'Attaboy' here and there:
1. The graphics and overall design of this game stinks. The players are so two dimensional, they look like someone cut them out of a magazine. The fonts used everywhere in the game - from the in-game stats to the start screens - are small and blurry enough to cause migraines.
2. Crash, crash, crash. Restart, restart, restart. Really annoying - simple, easy to spot (and fix!) bugs like this should never happen, especially in a product from an established franchise.
3. Our play-by-play guys, Marv and Steve: "Mr. Bland" Steve Kerr ain't no Mike Fratello, the two have no chemistry, and all the glitches in the sound levels make it seem like they recorded their sound-bytes in different studios. Not only that, buy how many times during a game do you want to hear the same recycled junk about the players? At least Kenny Smith and Ernie Johnson sound like they're having fun during the throwaway All-Star stuff.
4. I don't play the game online, so I can't speak to that, but in 'Dynasty' mode, gameplay has the usual variety of problems, most of which have been covered here in prior posts: Players 'skate'; your seven-foot center can't grab a rebound to save his life, but the opposing team's second string point guard gets a bunch of offensive put-backs; you can steamroll a team by a hundred points in 'beginner' mode, or get creamed by a hundred in any of the other harder modes; etc., etc.
5. The PDA. The damn PDA. Can we come up with a better idea that's not so annoying, or at least be able to tone this thing down? And, if you're going to try to incorporate some type of roleplaying to give the game some diversity, why not take a page from the 'Madden' franchise, or even the aforementioned NBA '06: The Life (which had a nifty idea and destroyed it with horrible execution) and actually develop the roleplaying? I know some hard-core players just want to play hoops, but frankly, if I've got a dynasty to contol, let me control every little bit of it.
6. The Draft: Why does so much of my scouting information disappear on draft day? And since when are 90% of NBA two guards under 6'2" and slow? Same thing with the 6'4" small forwards and 6'6" power forwards - ? A little more consistency matching the player parameters with the real life counterpoints.
7. Player development. Thank God we don't need those stupid points to train or scout players anymore. But tell me - why, when I blow my piddly staff budget (which you seem to be stuck with for the entire term you're with any particular team during the Dynasty mode) and hire the best coaches, trainers, etc., then go and draft a player rated 'good' or 'excellent' (taken from anywhere on the draft board, even the upper picks, during weak or strong draft years), does that player not only not develop, even with scads of training, but actually gets worse from year to year? Let us just adjust the player attributes during the course of their career, if we want to.
8. Create Player - while I'm thinking of it, how about letting us create a player and adding them to the draft pool, all the way through the Dynasty mode? Let us control player attributes whenever we want? Why can't we see our drafted or created players faces in their profiles, instead of the generic, no face shots? (Remember a few NBA Live's ago, and the cartoony player heads that jammed along with the jukebox music? How hard would it be to do that again? It might have been a little corny, but it was light years better than the creepy blank faces we've got now.) And what about letting the announcers say player names during games, instead of using generic jersey numbers? I understand that they can't know every crazy, bizarre player name generated by the game, but common names like Smith or Miller or Jones should be easy to work in. How about some more tattoo options? If if the A.I. sim can have tat's covering his whole body, why can't the players I dream up? And what the heck happened to the thorn tattoos? Huh?
8a. Speaking of staffing - I like the new system, but here's an idea or two: how about Create-A-Coach? I seem to remember another basketball game with that very feature. After all, I don't think old geezers like Jackson or Riley are gonna be coaching the same teams twenty years down the road (or even be around at all, for that matter), and if you can create players, why not...? And, if my team's players can develop, what about my staff? Now as the coaches and trainers and scouts retire (the guys with the high ratings), the leftover guys all pretty much suck, and don't seem to get any better. What's the point of playing a dynasty, if in your tenth year all the assistant coaches have a D rating?
9. All Star Weekend - how can a player with all stats set at 99 not consistently win the 3-point shootout or the dunk contest in sim mode?
10. Gimme more players in the Legends pool! Guys retire every year, don't they?
11. Stupid, hidden codes. I've got thousands of store points - why can't I unlock all the gear? Where are all the shoes? Hidden in the store? Half of 'em are still blacked out when I start playing...
Well.
Another reviewer here made the comment that EA has a habit of adding a couple nifty new items with each edition of NBA Live, but then turning around and screwing up most of the good stuff from the previous games that they should be BUILDING ON.
Very true.
After playing '06 for a few months now, a lot of the problems in this version make me wonder if EA was just out to make a quick buck and pushed the game out to market without really taking the time to develop new ideas and clean the end product up. As poorly done as it was, at least NBA '06: The Life was built around a cool, fresh idea. Frankly, this years edition of NBA Live is basically the same one we've been playing for the last ten years, with a couple new bells and whistles thrown in. It probably even took a BIG step back from the previous year.
I'm dying for a great basketball game. From the looks of all these posts, a whole lot of us are. Let's hope EA Sports still has the juice to produce it. So here's looking forward to '07, and another $50 bucks...

The new, both good and bad Dec 20, 2005
By Brian P. Kelder
"Brokenhearted Cub Fan"
This is a summary of what is new and improved, and new and worse.
The good:
1. Dynasty. You don't need points to get help for your players, the coach can just do it. Assistant coach was a good addition, and makes it better for the dynasty.
2. Fast breaks are back! So are alley-oops.
3. Graphics are better, the camera angles really help from the baseline angle. Players are more proportional, and easier to see.
4. Overall gameplay is better. The AI for players do realistic moves, like backdoor cuts. Also, the freestyle moves are not as effective, except for superstars. Not nearly as many blocks or steals, which were rediculous in 2005, especially blocks on dunks.
5. Superstars. Pretty nice moves to watch, tighter graphics for this game. Much more realistic moves, and they go away when you are tired, which is also realistic.
Bad:
1. The font used is wicked hard on your eyes, and are very hard to read.
2. Defense doesn't really do much. could be a little tougher.
3. Hard to hire coaches in dynasty, hiring is kinda annoying.
Summary: This is a great game for gameplay alone. The cuts are tight, and realistic. Much improved, and seems to run more smoothly than previous years. I would buy this game if I were a fan of the previous Lives.
Bonus: NBA Live 95 is on this game. Awesome, but no Tom CHambers glitch.

EA Sports/NBA Live- Step Your Game Up!!! Apr 11, 2006
By K. Reynolds The problems associated ww/ NBA Live 06 are endless and it's just as bad as Live 02, 04, and 05. What happened to the gameplay of the Live series. The Last fun NBA Live game they released in my opinion, was live 03, which introduced the freestyle control and had Jason Kidd on the cover. Live 03 had the balance necessary to keep hardcore enthusists and casual fans entertained with an up-tempo....realistic pace of an NBA game.
As for 06 where do I begin to complain.
1. Creating Players- is almost impossible to do without experiencing a headache. Not only does the game freeze when selecting the appearance of your created player, but you can't even view the players overall ratings while making adjustments to his attributes. This sucks because you have to exit and sit thru 2 loading screens to go back to the roster page to see what the player's rating is after you created him.
2. Dynasty Mode- I know others have mentioned this as well. But NBA Live must seriously discover a way to mimic the Owner/Dynasty Mode of the Madden Series, which is a game that can be enjoyed all year long due to their wonderful owner mode.
The PDA is back again from 05, and it will bug the hell out of you. Why do I have to wait a few days just to find out that my trade was rejected? It's almost impossible to make trades due to the fact that no team has cap space, and can't accept or consider your proposal. Why not include luxury tax next year? Why won't teams accept a first or 2nd round draft pick when offered as trade bait?
3. Scouting/Drafting - Why the hell are the incoming classes of players always a size that isn't conducive to the position. Why are 80% of the shooting guards 6'0, 6'1, or 6'2??? Why are large number of small forwards listed at 6'3 and 6'4??? Why are the power forwards set at an average height of 6'6 and 6'7??? What is this, scouting for an NCAA D3 school? Why don't any of the players that you scout and draft seem to not have much skill whatsoever and are completely "raw". Who's ever heard of a point guard that was drafted to the NBA, who can't dribble the ball, pass, or perform a simple crossover dribble???
4. Gameplay- The gameplay isn't fluid, players seem to be stiff at times, the players don't cut to the basket, interior scoring is limited, and the defensive capabillities are almost non-existant. I can cross over a player but can't drive to the bucket after getting the defender to stumble, next thing you know the defender has recovered to guard you again. Where is the logic in this???
Ultimately, this is a poor product. And as one other reviewer indicated....EA sports isn't paying attention to these concerns and complaints...simply because we're in the gaming stores every year around September to fork over our 50 bucks expecting a classic. EA will continue to put out this garbage because we as fans haven't demanded more from them, we "OK" all of the garbage. These guys at EA haven't shown me any improvement or consistency from 04 to 06...that's 3 years of mediocrity, and I'm officially boycotting. I'll most likely rent from now on, to determine if they're worthy or not. But what happened to the good ol days when if a videogame had an "EA Sports" logo on the box....you knew you were paying for quality???
Hey EA, if you want some advice hire all of the staff from Madden 04-06 to revamp this lackluster NBA Live series. We deseperately want fun, yet realistic gameplay along with an accurate/realistic owner mode.

Complete crap! What happend to the NBA Live 2005 engine Nov 22, 2005
By L. Fernandez
"Lfmesquite"
NBA Live 2006 is crap, that game is just all about dunking and the super powers of the players, the physicas are totally unrealistic. Any time you post up, it usually leads to you getting the ball stripped. For some reason and (I really really hate this) teams have a very hard time getting defensive rebounds in this game. There's nothing like getting a rare possesion in this game where you actually play solid defense and force a missed shot, only to have the offensive player slam dunk it back in your face while the defensive player just stands there like an idiot, which happends every time.
NBA Live 2005 was way way better. I'm already passed NBA Live 2006, but NBA Live 2005 is a classic I still play. There's no real flaws in this game. If you have a dominate big man, then you will dominate the paint and have a good chance of scoring, if they double team, you can find open guys for shots. You need to have an offensive plan and know what kind of team you are. sloppy offense leads to steals and missed shots which lead to fast break chances for the other team.

Live 06 Nov 07, 2005
By Dave Redaron
"Manny"
Although NBA Live is always fun to play and it has really nice dunks and things I'm going to have to judge this on its improvement on the last installment. The good improvements are that you can now run the fastbreak instead of having to settle with the half court set all the time. The 2nd is the Freestyle mode which I found annoying sometimes though because a player's rating is basically based on how good he is at a certain aspect of the game. FOr instance Josh SMith is crazy just because he can dunk it with the best but his overall game is not that good. It is very hard to stop someone defensively when they press L1 and then just press Circle and the basically have an easy basket. A Scorer Freestyle would just means that a player would do an assortment of layups and fancy manuevers to get the ball in the hole. ALthough I have to admit it is fun on the O end.
Another thing that bothers me is that it doesnt have the full aspect of the NBA game in it. In this you justpass it down low to Yao Ming or someone and watch him Iso his defender then just dunk it and that goes on about 10-20 times a game but in the NBA that would only happen 1-5 times. In the NBA they would try to find the open man for the shot but in Live it doesnt matter if your open if your big and if you can dunk. If your caught up with proper gameplay and things I suggest you go out and buy 2K6 because that is much better in that aspect. But if you just like to have fun and throw countless alley oops and sorts and enjoy it to the fullest this is a pretty good buy
