Another worthy addition to the Gust/NIS library. Apr 03, 2008
By Danyal Vierheller
"reader of all"
The ninth game in the popular Atelier series (though only the fourth one we've had here in the States), Mana Khemia shares elements of the AI games as well as the Gust/Banpresto RPG Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia.
The gameplay this time around is built around creating items through alchemy. While other games in the series had it as an important part, MK relies on it very heavily. To level up, you must create more and more items. This unlocks new abilities that you purchase with AP earned in battle.
The game is divided into chapters, and each chapter is divided into different sections. They start with an Event, which sets the stage for the chapter. Then there are a few Classes, where you hone your alchemy skills by completing quests. Then you have either Free Time or Detention depending on how well you did in your classes - Free Time has a quest system similar to Atelier Iris 3. You do odd jobs for money (and possibly items, I'm not sure about that yet). You can also converse with one of your teammates to build a relationship with them, but it's not really what I'd call a dating sim.
If you're a fan of the Atelier Iris series, Gust RPGs or NIS games in general, I highly recommend it. It's fun to play, there's a ton of content (10 hours in and I'm STILL learning how to do things!) The four-star overall rating is due to the fact that it can get a little repetitive at times .. but it's that same gameplay and wicked sense of humor we've come to expect from the series.
Besides, a black cat who transforms into a weapon? I like cats, and I like swords, so how could I NOT like this?

1/2 friends sim + 1/2 RPG = all fun Apr 28, 2008
By J. Armstrong Another great game from NIS america - if you like turn based RPG's or collection games then you will find much to enjoy here. 8 Different endings to earn, a new game + mode and a challenging bonus dungeon for completists.
You may want to pick up the strategy guide for the crafting sub-game though. While the game does a good job of telling you what the element of all the different items and gear you collect is, you cannot access that list while crafting. So either a large collection of notes or the guide can be quite useful.
A World of Rememberable Fun Apr 02, 2012

"I'm kind of an otaku, but I'm normal. I'm telling the truth. Honest."
(I WILL BE REFERRING TO ALL CHARACTERS BY THEIR UNCHANGED NAMES)
Even after 4 years, Mana Khemia has a special place on my shelf. This was just when I had started liking Gust games, and I just happened to find this at my local game store. The story is fun and touching at the same time, but by far, the best part of the game is it's characters. Vayne, the shy, slightly dark main character who gets dragged around by everyone, Philo, the bright, cute girl who just happens to like alchemy, but it always explodes. Then there's Gunnar, the crazy upperclassman who thinks he's a hero of justice/evil king. His constant confidence in his identity is really funny to watch, especially when Nike breaks it. Nike is a beast girl, a race that is close to extinction. To fix this, Nike's mother and aunt tell Nike to go to school and find lots of husbands and bring them home (Nike has no idea what making babies even entails, as revealed by the drama CD- not included in this package). Roxis hates Vayne for being his father's son, and is a pretty big jerk, but is often broken by Pamela, the adorable school ghost who knocks him senseless. Anna is the underclassman who is obsessed with order, but can often come up with strange misunderstandings. Mupe is the add-in alien, but is voiced by the wonderful Cho, who makes his character very funny. There are problems, however. No glitches to be seen, this time, but there is a different problem. The translation. Many times, there are lines that are added in that were not needed. But the biggest problem is the name-changing. Not funny, in the least. Nike (Pronounced Nikeh (you could even write it this way), not like the shoe.) is changed to Nikki, and the bigger changes lay with Gunnar and Philo. Philomele, or Philo for short, was changed to Jess. Why? I have no idea! Gunnar Damm was changed to Flay Gunnar. I can only think that they didn't want a character with a last name that said "damn". But it really makes no sense. Lene's name was also changed to a more American equivalent, Renee. As usual, NISA inserts dual audio, which is my sole reason for buying their games (OK, the games are really fun anyway!). The voices are absolutely abysmal in the English (look anywhere, and everyone says Pamela sounds like she had acid dripped down her throat), but are stellar in Japanese. Akira Ishida plays Vayne, while lovely Sakura Nogawa plays Philo. Many other famous voice actors are in the Japanese side, so I suggest you play on that one. It's much better that way. The battle portion is fun, as battles go quickly, and the real point of battles is to collect alchemy ingredients. You can collect animal hearts from beasts to use them later for attacks, turn them into sweets for alchemy, and many other variations. Trying to make special attacks you like is fun. Alchemy is fun as in you can make so many items, and make even more by using different items away from the recipe. I absolutely recommend this game to any RPG-lover. However, it is very anime based, so don't expect Final Fantasy XII or anything (good, that game sucked!)
Mana Khemia review Oct 18, 2008
By Nicholas D. Priester Excellent game, Mana Khemia provides a fresh unique RPG experience. Mana Khemia has flashy battles, likeable characters, and a decent overall time completion to finish the game. There is also a bonus dungeon after you finish the game and a new game plus+ option. Highly recommended for RPG fans everywhere.

Great Sony PS-2 RPG Game May 12, 2008
By Larry Nolan
"GRUMPY G"
It must be a Great Game, my 15 yr old grandson played it all the way thru and my wife is now over 75% thru the game. Both of them said it is a 5-star game. The graphics are typical PS-2, but still looks good. I seems to be a continuation or side story of the "Atelier Iris 3" game and uses the same looking characters, dungeons, locations, etc. and the battle system is much the same except no experience is received and characters do not have levels. Instead they gain better skills and improved abilities thru alchemy which is the main theme of this version of the game. It's a fun game and keeps you busy collecting alchemy ingredients and materials to create new things. I reccomemd it to fans of the Atelier Iris gsme series and RPG fans in general.
