Its finally here!! Oct 15, 2006

This game was easily my favorite game of the last year. After purchasing the gamecube version i fell in love immediately and proceeded to play it many many times on all difficulty settings. Now that the PSP edition is here, i finally have a holster-sized copy to bring with on the go.
First off, The game does indeed have all the contents and full story mode and exploration factor of its console brethren, plus 5 new missions that were originally cut out of the original release. The graphics are surprisingly clear and crisp, and smooth. What hinders the game in the graphic department is the "ghosting" of fast movement on the psp's lcd screen, albeit this is a hardware problem and not the game's fault.
Camera and Controls- are probably the biggest problem with Gun: showdown. With the widescreen display on the psp's screen, Colton stands left of center, to allow for what they probably thought was an easier viewing angle for over the shoulder firing. Unfortunately the camera is panned to close to colton and doesn't include enough of his environment around him that it becomes clausterphobic to play, especially when in an interior of a building. Aiming is tricky at first, and definately not the most accurate system that could have been implemented for the psp's lack of 2 analog control sticks. You use the Triangle, Square, X and Circle Buttons for looking up and down and left and right, while the left analog nub is used for moving backwards and forwards. The camera control quickly becomes the achilles heal of an impressive game.
The controls also lack user-friendly control with horse-riding. The horse sprints uncharacteristically faster than its console counterpart, and the sprint button is the same as jump, which can make those pony express missions 10 times more frustrating.
The Focus or quickdraw mode is still one of the games best features and works incredibly well, so if you were too worried about not surviving that gunfight for lack of control, than fear not, you are still in charge of Colton's lighting quick reflexes and aim.
The music is still in its full glory and the game includes one of the best in game music scores since Elder Scrolls Oblivion, or METAL GEAR SOLID 3. The audio and voice acting are superb, which is an astounding leap for video games in general (does anyone else remember how horrid PS1 voice acting was).
The Online modes are a lot of fun, and whether you have a friend to play with or not, the in game AI is incredible. Taking on other bandits who sprint from side to side and rolling out of your fire, whilst getting in a quick headshot on you is impressive, especially for a PSP title. The poker mode is hands down why i bought the PSP version (it was my favorite mini-game on the Gamecube version). While i did notice some of the card opponents names had been changed from the original game, it was essentially the same setup, and play rules. There are actually two ways to play poker solo. One is in quick play mode, where the stakes are low. and the other (and i'd recommend more) is in the multiplayer mode, where you can host your own tournament in ad=hoc, and whether anyone else is playing with you or not, the games AI will fill in whoever isn't there, and with much higher stakes, games last much longer.
Sadly though, the rewards for accomplishing mini-games do not translate into the main game, but they are good enough to warrant many playthroughs.
The main game is still the same great story, and is highly recommended. If you are new to the game i would actually recommend picking up one of the console versions of it first. If you are like me, a Gun vetaran, and want to have it on the go, i'd recommend it in a heartbeat.

This game looked cool in the advertisements, and I'd never played the console version, so I bought it with my Christmas money. It is the best PSP game I have, and I have at least 10, and have played many more. The controls are AWESOME, the storyline and characters are CLASSIC, and overall it feels like you're playing a classic Western film as Clint Eastwood or John Wayne. The details get pretty gorey, though, with brain splatter, blood squirting, and dismemberment, so it's not for the faint of heart. The one thing that could be better is the length of the game. It's definately not short, but if you added several more hours worth of story and a dozen more bounty missions or so, then it would be PERFECT.

PSP Visits The Old West Oct 22, 2006

When GUN SHowdown was announced for the PSP, I thought it was a completly new game from the ground up. But it was then revealed that it was a port from the console and PC version which meant that if you wanted to buy this to kill time, you wouldn't want to because you had already played it on the console.
But, as it turns out, GUN Showdown isn't exactly a direct port. While the story remains the same, several things have been added and tweaked for the PSP. Five new missions(that were intended for the console but cut out for whatever reason) have been added, Multiplayer and Quick Play action have been added as well. Also, you now keep your horse throughout the game instead of "stealing" one as was done in the original.
The gameplay is fun and exciting and will indeed make the time go by quickly. The sound is amazing. In fact, this is one of the better ports to come to the PSP and is pretty cheap as well. At $29.99, you can't go wrong with this game. And for the first western on the PSP, it's well worth the wait.

 Great game... but lost in the translation to PSP Apr 06, 2008

First just let me start by saying that i love "Gun" and i count it as one of my favorite games of all time . With that being said , I'm not crazy about this PSP version for two reasons
- Controls : Simply put the controls are VERY frustrating and there's quite a bit of a learning curve.. especially for those that are used to the console versions. Because of the PSPs lack of a second analog button as well as the analogs inability to "click" as L3 and R3 buttons it throws the entire control scheme out of wack. The circle , X , triangle , and square buttons act as your missing right analog stick. This makes for some ackward movements [especially when trying to aim diagonally]. This is frustrating in itself but it becomes almost unbearable when you realize how difficult it is switching weapons , reloading , and most importantly using the ZOOM on the Rifle. There is no easy way to use the zoom when you're in the middle of a fire fight. Forget about it. You have to press a direction on the D-pad while hitting the square button if i remember correctly. It might not sound like a big deal but remember that your using your PSP analog stick to move and your main buttons to aim. Basically its very VERY ackward and way too difficult to pull off such a simple action in the heat of the moment. Maybe after several hours of play you can train yourself to use these controls but as a huge fan of the game i can barely get into it because the controls are so bad. They did the best with what they had to work with i suppose... It's really just a bad pairing between the game and with what the psp offers in terms of available buttons.
Camera : As stated in another review the camera is too close to your character and he's intentionally off center to the left. This just feels and looks weird. It' not bad enough to ruin the game but it will throw you off from time to time and as one previous reviewer said it can definitely be claustrophobic in certain areas.
If you love the game and can get this version for $9 to $15 then i'd say it's not a bad buy but i HIGHLY RECOMMEND you play it or rent it first because if you liked the console versions you may be disappointed and frustrated with this one.
I'd give GUN the game 5 stars but this one only deserves 2 or 3

"avid music fan and book reader"
This is a pretty cool game. One of the best things about this game is the story. It would make a pretty good novel. The gameplay is something to get used to but its not that difficult once you get the hang of it. The graphics are top notch but sometimes patchy and lags behind especially in some of the cinimatics but its really nothing to be concerned about.
This game is a good one to add to your PSP collection
