My second most favorite PS2 game! Mar 12, 2010 Yes who wouldn't like god of war? I mean this game should belong in every gamers collections for playstation 2 & 3 and I mean no GOW clone games (AKA conan). Once again the game takes place where the GOW 1 story left off, Kratos who is the new god of war helps his city of olympus and to set off for another journey to defeat the other gods who have betrayed him which he is no longer a god for this journey.
Once again the storyline was great (but it's not over yet) and the game play with newer bad guys and better weapons makes you play til your tired. I can't wait til GOW 3 comes out which I don't have a PS 3 yet but im saving up for one when that game comes out.
These GOW games destroy that talentless manufacture hip hop clowns 50 cent games which is not worth mentioning here.
Let's put it this way. Would you really wan't to buy those cheap shooting games from that talentless manufacture artist 50 cent of todays MTV? Or are you going to discover what truly amazing games GOW has to offer?
Your choice!

Significant Improvement Mar 12, 2010 God of War 2 is, in my opinion, a huge improvement to the prior game in nearly every way. However you're probably curious why I didn't give it a full 5 star rating and I'll get to that but first I will tell you why God of War 2 has improved on the first one in nearly every way.
Firstly God of War 2 looks far better that the prior God of War, no question of this fact at all. It's just an un-debatable factor. Another big thing is the game is chock full of bosses including a salute to Ray Harryhausen's vision of the Kraken in Clash of the Titans (1981). And not just any bosses but fun and enjoyable bosses rather than the dismal collection the first one had.
As well the story in God of War 2 isn't, well, dumb like the first. I can't really fault God of War 1 for having such a dumb story because the game is really about beating the snot out of everyone but I must stress how much of an improvement second one is. God of War 1 just couldn't make up it's mind whether or not Kratos was an ultra bad-ass or a tortured hero so it attempted to do both and came off as really goofy as where Kratos would kill so many including some innocent good guys and then the game would go "Oh but you should feel sorry for Kratos, he accidentally killed his family". I mean really now? God of War 2 instead makes the story more primal and a bit more tied to the Mediterranean mythology on how the Titans are the true benefactors of humanity and the Olympians are man's fickle antagonists.
The stage quality of the game is also significantly better than the first though a persistent problem that is in both God of Wars is the first level is a million times better than every level thereafter. See I would honestly say the God of Wars should try to make each stage more self contained set pieces rather than trying to link them together because when it does that those stages start to run together. In God of War 2 after the snowy mountain that imprisons Prometheus and Typhon it takes you to the Island of Creation which is where the game starts to slow down, though picks itself up at around the time of meeting Atlas. Granted it's not as dull as the Athens stages or as infuriating as Hades stage in God of War 1. Some of the puzzles in the stages of God of War 2 are also fairly clever as well, there's one after the Chariot statue which echoes some Zelda block stacking puzzles and there's a good few puzzles in God of War 2 that involve slowing down time.
Now as to why I didn't give GoW 2 a full 5 star perfect rating in my eyes- There's no motivation to play it again in any aspect as well it's not a very long game, like 6-8 hours. It's not just the fact that you can see and do everything on your first play through, it's that's it's really not amazingly fun to fight through enemies. The Bosses are great but a problem with fighting the average enemy is that your strategy for each doesn't really focus on them as much as a hoard of them. So really your tactics are "flail to hit as many enemies as possible, block when one of them attacks, return to flailing". That doesn't mean the flailing attack isn't fun, it is quite fun in fact, however the problem is constantly being interrupted within combos and series of attacks because much of the fun in God of War 2's attacks is pulling off combos and maneuvers rather than it's singular slashes. It's like you're getting into the groove of the play and it feels very exhilarating but then it slaps you on the back with a glowing prone enemy going "BLOCK NOW... NOW... NOW NOW and NOW".
As well there's a general thing I detest about planned trilogies and it often manifests in a game's second iteration (Often because in the first game they don't initially plan on making a series) and I bet you know what I'm taking about- the ending that's basically a "See you in the next game, enjoy this inconclusive ending!".
God of War 2 is still a great game but it's certainly a game you'll play once, deposit into your gaming library and probably never play again. A great single shot, that's God of War 2 in a nutshell.
One of the PS2's best Feb 25, 2010 God of War II takes everything the first game did and then pulls its head off, slams it down on the floor, throws it around, juggles the body along with the head, and then pulls out its dual blades and skewers them and puts them on kabobs.
This game makes me want to make crazy, sentence long metaphors like that (and to be honest, this game is just a little bit more over the top than the first God of War). This is not a kids game. It's got more blood than SSX has snow. It's so violent that it makes Jack Thompson wake up at night in a sweaty fever. We should be glad that the game is so good that it actually makes the crazy violence not only justified, but hilariously gratifying.
The combat is basic beat-em-up fare, and on easier game modes the campaign can turn into an amazing button mashing stress reliever that even the most casual of gamers can play. Later on, in harder difficulty levels the game can become difficult, to the point that Ninja Gaiden may want to check its resume. This makes a nice array of game difficulties so that everyone can customize their experience. Easier difficulties can go without too many combos or strategies, while the harder game can actually force some thought inside of the fighting.
The game is the best looking on the PS2, bar none except perhaps the gorgeous models of Metal Gear solid 3: Subsistance or Resident Evil 4. The envirnoments and scale of God of war 2 beats both of them anyway. Halfway through the game Kratos, the bare chested protagonist, managed to make two huge, miles long landforms slam into each other. The draw distance and sheer detail in this scene made me checking my PS2 to see if the game was actually streaming video from the internet. But, no, it was an in-engine cut scene made with the apparently vast power of my little PS2 Slim. Booyah.
The game evokes the same amount of polish, splendor, and absolute super hyper awesome epic bombast. The music riffs on that sort of large scale Lord of the Rings thousand-man battle sort of theme throughout the entire game. The story doesn't really require the player to know what's going on, and is a crazy, no-holding-back mash up of many realms of classic mythology. The included extras and documentaries are fun to watch, though they take this crazy game a bit too seriously.
It all adds up to a hell of a ride. God of War II is highly recommended to any PlayStation 2 owner.
GOOD GAME Feb 12, 2010 Great powers,graphics,action.
The play games is excellent, the only thing that as you go becomes very difficult.
You can't keep a god-man down Feb 04, 2010 I bought this game as a wind-down after a tiring summer of work. I had heard it was one of the great games on the PS2, with fantastic graphics and lots of mindless action. In that respect I was satisfied. GOW 2 has a huge amount of frenzied, hyperkinetic battle sequences, and rewards the work needed to upgrade to better weapons and powers. The graphics and level design are grand, epic, and beautiful, making you live inside the mythological world. There is an abundance of puzzles to solve, but too many in my opinion and often too easy to warrant putting them in instead of more action. This game doesn't hold back on the graphic depiction of violence (no bloodless kills here), which is not to my taste really, but there are clear labels to warn the player what to expect. Not a sophisticated game by any means, but a very good example of its kind.
SPOILER ALERT*************************************************
The story is grandiose but lacks coherence and suffers from 'video-game narrative syndrome', where the story needs to fit in with the style of the game. Kratos, a mortal who defeated Ares, the god of War, in the previous game and became the new god himself, has somehow become unpopular on Olympus. It's somewhat unclear what the problem is, either he is too bloodthirsty (as opposed to those gentle war gods out there) or Zeus is afraid he will usurp him. Anyway, he is betrayed by Zeus, reduced to mortal status again, and killed (the old 'drain your god-like powers into the magical sword thus leaving you vulnerable to being killed' trick). But he's only mostly dead, and with help from the titans is able to start another journey towards godhood and the vengeance he craves.
Kratos is a flawed hero, but the nature of the game pushes him towards sociopathy, because of course you end up having to kill everyone that you meet. I can imagine Kratos at a dinner party: 'I WILL have the last piece of cake. YOU WILL DIE if you try to stop me'. And it's not as though you can really feel justified in this all the time, because the writers have burdened him with a few too many 'motivations'. He wants revenge for the death of his wife and son. He wants to save his beloved Sparta. He wants revenge on Zeus for betraying him. He wants to free the human race from the oppression of the gods. So when the game requires you to murder someone for their magical item or just to open a locked door, are you doing it for a noble end or just because Kratos is pissed off? The mythology is kind of trivialised by the demands of the game as well. One of the sisters of Fate warns you that 'There is no power that is greater than Fate', which is a decent philosophical position. Except of course that it turns out that a man with blades wrapped around his arms and a few cool magic spells actually does have the power to destroy fate. Take that, poignant reflection on the human condition! There's also a bit of pandering to the gaming audience. One of the notorious sections in the first level does rather undercut the image of Kratos as a man tormented with longing for his dead wife. When she appears to him in a vision later on in the game, you almost expect her to mention it. Oh, and I chuckled at the 'Empire Strikes Back' moment in the final battle. George Lucas wants his trope back!
But these are just amusing asides on the nature of videogames. God of War 2 delivers what it advertises it will do. Play on, ghost of Sparta!
