4A really fun, lacks in the graphic deparment.  Mar 01, 2010
This is the "newest" Disgaea game. The game is a great improvement from it's predecesors. They added a lot more skills, and changed the way they were learned. They also added a lot more features. The story is like the other games, very humorous, and best in my opinion. My only "beef" with this game are the graphics. I enjoy the "anime" like look they give the sprites, but they are very unpolished. You can even see the pixels in the corners. That is something that can not be forgiven, specially in this time and age and for the PS3. Which is suppose to have he best graphics of the current gen.

I really hope they continue to make great games like this, but to improce their graphics, or at least polish them.

4Just about as good as the first  Feb 03, 2010
The first Disgaea was a big strange surprise to me. But i very quickly fell in love with it. That lasted for a long time. Then the second game came around and it was not as great in my opinion. I was weary about the third. But after playing it, i realize my mistake. It is great. Its just about as good as the first one. The only reason i would say its not just as good as the first is just because this one didnt come first. Its right back to being on par with the quality and funny story line as the first game. A must have for a system with a pretty small must have library.

4Pretty Fun, but not Pretty  Feb 02, 2010
I own a Baby Grand Piano and a 65" HDTV, but live in a beat up manufactured home. Disgaea 3 is like my Manufactured Home as it sits in my trailer park, not great to look at, but has nice stuff on the inside. Let me get this out of the way: The graphics are awful. For a PS3. For a PS2. I have Disgaea on my PSP and it looks far smoother and crisper, the sprites and tiles are much prettier, and I can tell just as well where the anime females best assets lay. But that SHOULD NOT deter you from getting it if you love turn based grid strategy games. I liked Final Fantasy Tactics. I enjoyed Dungeons and Dragons Tactics. I love and am in ecstacy playing Disgaea 3. It follows the same tried and true grid strategy base as many other games. It adds a layer of strategy with different colored tiles, dubbed "Geo Tiles" and big cubes called "Geo Cubes". If a Geo Cube lays on a Geo Tile, then all Geo Tiles of that color take on the attribute of the Geo Cube, such as Exp +50 or Invinciblity. You can destroy the cubes, which subsequently changes the color of the tiles to the color of Geo Block that you destroy. If another Cube lies on a Tile that changes color, it is destroyed and will subsequently change the newly colored tiles into the color of the Geo Block that was destroyed by the "Geo Chain". You can also pick up and throw these cubes (as well as characters and sentient bombs dubbed "Prinnies") to give a certain tile color multiple desired effects. This adds a fun, albeit time consuming, layer of strategy to the matches as you must figure out the best layout of cubes for desired effects, or for the longest chain. When you get a large chain, you get "Bonus" items when you complete the map. One thing I absolutely LOVE about Disgaea, is that you can replay the same maps over and over. You can level grind all the way to 9,999 if you want, though most people will not find it necessary I think. But this is a nice way of keeping you from getting stuck. There are many things to do in the game. Item World lets you level up your items and make them stronger. Class World let's you add bonus stats like movement and throwing distance permanently to your stat line, as well as increasing your "Aptitude", which is how much gain you get from items and levels. The Homeroom lets you make clubs for your people to get bonus' like greater $ gain or XP leeching. And that doesn't really scratch the surface of your options. The game is so large, and has so much going for it, that the graphics didn't bother me nearly as much after the first hour or so. If you love strategy and have some time, check out Disgaea 3.

4Much better than 2, a little less good than 1.  Dec 04, 2009
Title is a summary of it all, but here's the detail. This will mostly be comparing it to the other two games, rather than about Disgaea 3 itself much.

Disgaea: Hour/Afternoon of Darkness is absolutely one of the best strategy RPGs ever created. It's got a great storyline, great characters, fun battles and is hilarious as all Hell. The only other Nippon Ichi game that I'd say is close to how funny it is (and maybe even more) is Makai Kingdom.

Disgaea 2, however, strayed from this path and attempted to be more serious. While it did make some upgrades to the battle system, it almost entirely ditched the humor aspect of Disgaea 1 and made me sit there and wait during the entire game for the good jokes to pop up, my expectations having been set from Disgaea 1. Now, that's not to say I dislike serious games, Phantom Brave is yet another one of the greatest strategy RPGs made and also probably one of my top 20 favorite games, but Phantom Brave was its own game series. It'd be like if Terminator 1 was the slasher/horror flick that it is, but then 2 starred Will Ferrel and was a comedy. It just completely changes the atmosphere of the game, it's uncalled for, it's out of place.

Even if you take the title of Disgaea 2 off and name is something else, I still feel D2 is rather mediocre. It does add a bit more to the battles, but the characters and story, to me, are pretty bland. I was honestly quite bored with the game the entire time. It's a decent game, I had fun moments in it and it's not completely devoid of humor or style, but it's really just an average game.

Disgaea 3, however, goes right back to the roots, as if they realized the mistake they made with the second. It goes back to being a humorous game with nonsensical plot devices. That was the magic of Disgaea 1. It surprises you by ending up actually having deep characters who are more serious than what the game starts it all out to be. They actually care, have feelings, love, hate, cry and it's unexpected since in the beginning, it's a comedy where nothing matters. Mao even looks almost identical to Laharl. The game isn't QUITE as funny as Disgaea 1 and it's somewhat easy to see how the story plans to unfold, since it follows a very similar path as the first game, so while it's much better than the second, it does fall short of being as good as the first, mostly due to a slight lack of originality.

The last note about D3 has to be about the graphics. It's both good and bad that it's the same engine as the PS2 games. Since it looks the same, you could say it's good for being nostaligc. Plus, it's a comedy game, it's supposed to be cartoony. It just wouldn't come off the same if it had graphics on the same level as Killzone 2. However, at the same time, they could have upped the graphics a LITTLE and still have it mostly be a cartoony sprite style. It is on the PS3, after all. Might as well put it to good use, you know?

Now, about the actual game itself, rather than comparing. Disgaea 3 has excellent gameplay and characters. The story is a bit cheesy, but still entertaining, especially with Disgaea's setting. It's a great game, there's not much else to say other than to rant on about how much I love it, so instead I'll say what I really hate about it, the huge flaws.

One is the camera. There's three view modes: zoomed in, normal and overhead. Zoomed in has no purpose, it just makes the low-resolution sprite graphics incredibly jaggy and it's annoying that the default view in towns is zoom (yes, you can zoom out and make the graphics look like they're not trash)! Overhead view is useful for seeing around more corners so you don't have to keep turning the camera in circles, but whenever you try to do anything while in overhead (attack, use an item, end turn), you will have to press X twice instead of once, the first time sets the camera back into zoom, whereas if you're in zoom or normal camera view, you only need to press it once. After that, if you need to see in overhead again, you must press L2 twice again, so it becomes annoying to have to keep pressing L2, L2, X, X just to do ONE thing, repeatedly over and over. The camera also zooms in every time during an attack animation, making it bit annoying having to see those pixellated PS2-port graphics every attack.

Another thing is the absurd number of unnecessary monsters in every fight. For example, there is a boss named Prinny Mask, who himself states, "I am anti-social." However, in the actual fight with him, he's on a map with twenty or so other enemies. What is an anti-social person doing with almost two dozen allies on the map? And this happens in every single fight in the game. Every fight. Even the last fight in the game, with the cutscene showing just you and the boss, suddenly he has four other allies on the map, with no explanation for them. Sometimes, just you versus the boss is okay. That's right, NIS, you don't have to dump a load of monsters on every map for people to have a challenge, or to have fun. Lastly, this is worsened through the fact that every map must be totally cleaned of enemies before you can continue. You can't win by simply defeating the main enemy on the map.

The final annoyance with this game is that as it progresses, map puzzles become more and more frequent. My favorite levels are the small maps with just you, the enemy and nothing but bashing each other. I like getting to the point of things and doing the dirty work of punching one another's lights out, not dealing with dumb puzzles to disable enemy invincibility, or to cause all spellcasters on the map to be silenced and to not do those puzzles renders the map unplayable. It'd be okay and even fun if it was just a few maps, but midway through the game, this will become extremely annoying and repetitive when every map has some ridiculous enemy buff that you have to work around with a puzzle (specifically, it's with the geo blocks in the game, for anyone wondering what I mean by puzzles).

Despite those flaws, I highly recommend Disgaea 3: Absence of Justice. Overall, it's an incredibly excellent game. Everyone who likes RPGs and owns a PS3 has *NO* excuse to not own this.

5NIS continues to delight fans with moe-based SRPG fun!  Nov 15, 2009
NISA is known for releasing 2 types of games: completely substance free anime fan service based RPG's, and Disgaea.

The Disgaea series has become a flagship for a reason. The games are cute and simple to learn, but offer endless depth and complexity in the battle system and character customization options. This is not to say the Disgaea games don't have a fair amount of moe-based fan service, but simply that people who aren't necessarily the biggest fans of anime may still find pleasure in this game.

As a series, Disgaea's style can be explained quite simply- you have a hero, a stupid story (really bad in this one), a simple quest that is always launched from a hub (the netherworld, a small town, and in this- the Netherworld Academy), a few party members you pick up along the way, a horde of monsters that you can create, an item world to strengthen any type of item, and finally some sort of voting system to further your progress.

All 3 Disgaea games are faithful to this formula, but Disgaea 3 seems to take it to the highest level. Improvements and changes include the ability to bribe, bomb, and drug the student council members to get them to approve your changes, a classroom to fit your heroes/monsters and interact with them, a class world to buff up specific monsters, and of course, high definition graphics.

The game can be beaten easily in about 30-40 hours, but if you want to truly dig deep (and earn all of the trophies) be prepared to put at least ten times that amount into this game!

If you are unfamiliar with the SRPG genre, here is a brief explanation. You control characters on a grid. You move these characters into strategic positions so that you can gang up on enemies and take them out before they can get to you. Combat is turned based with the player moving all of their forces first then choosing to end their turn and the AI follow suit. Defeated enemies and ally healing both result in experience points for that unit. Units level up and get stronger during battles and carry their levels through the entire game. Unlike the Fire Emblem series, defeated characters are A-OK in Disgaea- they just can't be used until you go back to the hospital and revive them. In Disgaea, battles can be repeated any number of times so characters can level up before continuing the story. It should be noted however, that any story-based characters that were in the battle will be replaced with lesser monsters if the fight is repeated. Another thing that sets Disgaea apart is the fact that, even though the odds may sometimes be stacked against you, the AI controlled team possesses no special, game breaking, unfair ability that you do not. You can make all of the same monsters for your own army and use all of the same attacks- the only exception of course being Boss character special moves (though more often than not, Boss characters join your party afterwards).

To cut this review short and move on with my life all I can say is hurry up and buy this game, its incredible and you will not be disappointed. If you love long games, there is enough meat here to keep you playing for hours on end. If you don't, you will find the main story to be just long enough - and the game can be beaten without the endless hours of grinding about which many RPG haters complain.
