old school games Mar 13, 2010 Super ghouls and ghosts is one of the best games ever, very addictive but also very difficult.
Nothing Like The Oldies Feb 14, 2010 Forget all those silly Hi Tech games. Nothing beats going back in time and reliving your childhood than playing all the old videos. The best part is that you don't have to press all those buttons and learn a slew of combinations. Also, the game comes to you and you don't have to go on a looonngg journey and find every little thing hidden behind every little thing. I Love it..............
A long time ago, in video arcades far, far away....great adventures took place. Feb 14, 2010 + Pros:
+ 22 games for less than 50 cents apiece
+ Saveable options including difficulty settings, button configurations & rapid fire option
+ Bonus items for each game including tips, game history, artwork, etc.
+ Works on Playstation 2 and Playstation 3 game systems
- Cons:
- No high-resolution or widescreen options available
- No savable in-game progress like the Sonic Collection
- Most of the games look like caveman drawings to gamers born after 1992.
I love old school coin-op video games. I remember playing almost all of these games in my local video arcade for 25 cents a pop. They were addicting, they were challenging, but most of all, they were FUN.
Special moves in fighting games weren't very common back then, and the internet wasn't going to arrive for about a decade. Anyone who figured out the "SHORYU-KEN!" move in Street Fighter II and could perform it repeatedly was held in the highest regard.
Whenever I need to take a break from 7th generation 1080p console gaming and regress back to the age of using my lawn-mowing allowance money to play video games, this is a great collection to do it with.
Here's a complete games list and the playing options available:
1942 - option for 2 players (alternating)
1943 -option for 2 players (cooperative)
**1943 KAI - option for 2 players (cooperative)
Bionic Commando - option for 2 players (alternating)
Commando - option for 2 players (alternating)
Exed Exes - option for 2 players (cooperative)
Final Fight - option for 2 players (cooperative)
Forgotten Worlds - option for 2 players (cooperative)
Ghosts & Goblins - option for 2 players (alternating)
Ghouls & Ghosts - option for 2 players (alternating)
Gun.smoke - option for 2 players (alternating)
Legendary Wings - option for 2 players (cooperative)
Mercs - option for 3 players (cooperative)
**Pirate Ship Higemaru - option for 2 players (alternating)
Section Z - option for 2 players (alternating)
Son Son - option for 2 players (cooperative)
Street Fighter II - option for 2 players (VS)
Street Fighter II Champion Edition - option for 2 players (VS)
Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting - option for 2 players (VS)
Super Ghouls & Ghosts - 1 player
Trojan - option for 2 players (alternating)
Vulgus - option for 2 players (alternating)
** The first time these games have been released in North America.
As you can see, there are 8 games on this disc that allow cooperative play, and the one that steals the limelight is MERCS - it allows three players at once using a multi-tap for the Playstation 2, or three standard controllers on a Playstation 3.
GRAPHICS: Okay, like most games of this era, the graphics are not top of the line. Keep in mind, these games were made between 1984 and 1992 so if you're expecting to see detailing like Heavenly Sword, this isn't your collection. The gameplay is centered in the middle of the screen and there is an option to increase the height and width of the screen - no widescreen option, though. I'd suggest turning off the PS2 graphic upscaler - the games look better without it.
OPTIONS: There are a lot of options here. Most of the selections include:
Difficulty (easy, normal, hard)
Extra Lives (how many to start)
Controller Setup (choosing buttons for shooting, jumping, etc)
Rapid Fire (on/off)
Sound Remix (original game music or an alternative track)
There is also a Bonus section for each game with its history, trivia, artwork, tips, and music tracks.
GAMEPLAY: A wide variety of game genres can be found here: vertical shooters, platformers, side scrollers, hack & slash and fighting. The main selling point of this compilation is the Street Fighter collection, which offers a unique gameplay option - Street Fighter Deluxe.
Street Fighter Deluxe is a VS only option that allows players to pick a fighter from any of the Street Fighter II games (World, Champion, Hyper) and pit them against each other with the following selectable options:
Handicap (1-10)
Game Speed (1-10)
Time Limit (on/off)
Rounds (1,3,5)
Stage Select
Now I won't lie to you, some of these games are controller-throwing-ly, tooth-grinding-ly, fist-pounding-ly, lip-biting-ly hard (I'm looking at you, Ghouls & Ghosts...) There is no in-game save option and some of the games have no continues - so if you want to see the endings you'll have to either increase your gaming skills, or take the easy way out and look them up on YouTube.
If you're the type of gamer who doesn't like 2-D shooters or 2-D fighting games, this is probably not the collection you're looking for.
But if you're a student of video game history, or an old schooler like me who stacked quarters on the arcade cabinet glass waiting for your turn to play...then look no further.
Highly recommended.
Very good set of arcade games Aug 05, 2009 Capcom Classics Collection had some old favorites & some games I have never played but took a liking to. Some on here I really didn't care for. The main selling point was Street Fighter II Street Fighter II Champion Edition & SF Hyper fighting can't say anything about them that have already been said so it's a solid fighting game. Final Fight again not much to say just a good beat em up. Then there's Mercs never played it but it's a solid shooter. It's your basic overhead shooter it is very short shorter than Strider 2. Forgotten Worlds it isn't as good as the Genesis version. All games are pretty much Arcade perfect. There is a Capcom Classics Collection volume 2 I might check that 1 out as well there needs to to be a 3rd volume cause Capcom has a ton & I mean a ton of great Arcade games. Your insane if you don't buy this I mean Street Fighter II Forgotten Worlds Final Fight Mercs. Go get you a arcade stick & this game in & play this you will love it.

Difficulty and Continues Ruin Gameplay Jul 23, 2009 I know this collection is a bargain price, but there is just one major problem. That is the difficulty. The games are by nature difficult, but you pretty much have endless continues. It's kind of like Mario Brothers in that once you used the warp zones and stepped on the turtles you could easily beat the game. The only difference here is you can continue anywhere and you are not running out of quarters.
Another thing that is missing is strategy. These are all action games that the enemies and obstacles are in a pattern. Once you very tediously mastered the pattern you win. But you will not have to master the pattern because you can just continue.
The only games that are worth playing are the Street Fighter series. At least there is strategy behind your moves and combos. And though you have endless continues you still have to win the fight.
I recommend you don't buy this series and leave retro games to roms. I'm an older gamer and while I grew up playing games like this series and have no clue why I thought it was fun. The are some classics that are good like the original Zelda, Pac Man, Mario Brothers. I just prefer a modern shooter, role playing, strategy, or simulation. The elements behind these action games have already been exhausted and its time to play modern games.
