really who's gonna buy this for $110.00? Dec 18, 2009 so, while this is an interesting and creepy game, its just not woth the $110.oo price tag at the top of the page. the game has some nice effects, and a decent storyline, but don't ask me to be impressed by big name voice actors. its heart is true to the FPS type game, while remaing dark(i had to use the flashlight alot), AND ALMOST SCARY. the sound effects were decent and the visuals were good. there is also some version of online player maps reminscent of HALO. overall its a fun game.

If you are a fan of Area 51 conspiracies... Jan 10, 2009 If you enjoy the conspiracy theories surrounding Area 51 or aliens, then you will likely enjoy this game. The game play was not too difficult, though there were a few stages I struggled with. Advanced gamers may not find it very challenging, but if you are a casual game player it will offer a challenge to you to beat the game.
What makes this game isn't the graphics which are good but not great or even the voice work throughout the game by David Duchovny which is impressive that the makers of the game spent the money to get him, even though towards the end of the game it does seem as his enthusiasm is waning a bit and the voice work is dispassionate at times. But the real gem of the game is the storyline. The conspiracies and the story of Area 51 is constantly being advanced, right to the conclusion of the game. Along the way in killing creatures and aliens you must also pick up clues which reveal secrets of the military base and unlock hidden videos which give further insight into the actions taking place at Area 51. Honestly though, even though the story is what made this game more than just a first person shooter action game, it does get a tad overdone at times. EVERY conspiracy you have ever heard of from the common ones like the JFK assassination and the faked moon landing by the USA in 1969 to more obscure things like Bigfoot sightings, they are all woven into the story. On the one hand it shows how they really took the time to develop the story of Area 51 deeply, but on the other hand you kind of feel as though its a running joke too - that every possible conspiracy theory is connected to aliens.
One of my favorite sets in the game was the faked moon landing set. This was a really cool stage to just spend a little time looking around the set and enjoying the detail. And when you reach the final stages of the games and you are battling the "Grays" that's pretty cool too. Basically you progress through the game first working with a team (Bravo team) killing mutants, and then after everyone in Bravo team is killed you hook up with Delta team for a stage or two. But eventually you are on your own and encountering different mutants and scientists along the way until you make your way down to the core of Area 51, battling Black Ops soldiers along the way, in an effort to destroy the Grays.
All in all a very well developed game with a strong storyline albeit a bit overdone at times, good voice work by the ex-X-Files guy, though he does sound a bit fatigued by the end of the game (one wonders if he had to do it all in one day!), and good graphics throughout the game. I would have rated the game higher on the "fun" level, but frankly some of the stages are very challenging for a casual player and the game is quite long which in my opinion lessens the fun a bit. However, overall this is one of the best adventure/first person shooter games I've ever played and I would certainly recommend it.

Underrated, but Short Feb 25, 2008 This game went by as kind of a sleeper. Didn't get much attention, but it deserved more. It's a solid, fun FPS with decent graphics (good graphics in the cut scenes), and a host of famous voice actors from David Duchovny (The X Files) to Marilyn Manson. What I liked most about the game is the alien and conspiracy lore entered into the game. Files scannable throughout the game give descriptions of the government's secrets and cover-ups and at one point you even get to explore the set of a fake moon landing. As for complaints, the game can often be too easy, though there are a few parts near the end that can have you repeating them easily six or seven times to get through. This is strange to me with the game going from mostly simple to very difficult without much middle ground. The ending is also a bit... blunt. One minute you're doing things and big stuff is happening (trying not to spoil anything here) and the next you get a quick cut scene and the credits roll. Closure is given and loose ends are mostly tied up, but it's still pretty abrupt. And another gripe--the game is pretty short. Very short, rather. I know it's a FPS, but you can get through it in four or five play sessions if they're reasonably long ones. I believe I beat it in two days. So I wouldn't recommend buying it unless you can get a good deal on it used, but it's absolutely rentable.
I know I've said some negative things about the game, but it really is good. It goes by at a good pace and offers plenty of shooting action. Though I was disappointed by the relatively small amount of useable weapons (one pistol, one shotgun, one assault rifle, one sniper rifle, two grenade types, and a couple special weapons), the weapons that are there are relatively satisfying and the 10mm Scorpion handgun is useful through the whole game, being able to drop most enemies in one to three hits.
All in all, you should play this if you're into FPSs. But only buy it if you can get it used. It's just too short to warrant a new price. But still, Area-51 is a solid and enjoyable experience with plenty of atmosphere in the second half and of course multi-player.

PS2's answer to Halo? Just what I was looking for!!! Feb 15, 2008 With the constant upgrading of platforms, consoles, game systems, etc.,I must admit I'm trailing a little behind-- as I still faithfully play on the PS2. And with a diminishing variety of games to choose from, this was a great discovery! I remember it was $50.00 when it debuted in 2005, I just picked it up for twenty bucks! I guess you could call me the casual gamer, but this game is great, and I'd put it pretty close to the classics like Tomb Raider and Resident Evil. (Pretty Close)
